Processing batch input sessions is the actual execution of the transactions and data entry into the SAP system. As has been indicated in previous sections, the system simulates the manual data entry and performs the same consistency checking. The system can only process batch input sessions which have not yet been processed or have finished with the Incorrect status, and which are not locked. There are two ways of processing batch input sessions: Automatically, using the report RSBDCSUB to submit the sessions for processing in the background. Interactively or online, using the batch input management utilities. Usually, when the interfaces with external systems have been established using batch input programs and sessions, the actual processing is performed automatically, using the RSBDCSUB report with variants. However, there are occasions when it is convenient to perform interactive or online processing, such as for correcting a session or for initial testing purposes. Running Sessions Automatically with RSBDCSUB Using the RSBDCSUB report for processing batch input sessions is the normal way when systems are in productive operation. It is assumed that the batch input program and sessions generation have been tested and normally work correctly. To process sessions automatically you should: Create the needed variants for the RSBDCSUB report Schedule a periodic background job for the RSBDCSUB To call the RSBDCSUB, select System Services Reporting from any menu. Enter RSBDCSUB in the Program input field and click on the Execute icon. The system shows the criteria selection screen for this report. On this screen you should select which sessions will be automatically run. The system, by default, will process all sessions with status to be processed and incorrect. Enter your criteria and save the settings as a variant by selecting Goto Variants Save as variants. Repeat this process as many times as needed. Next, call the background job definition screen (transaction code SM36) by calling System Services Jobs Define job and create as many jobs with the RSBDCSUB as needed. For example, you might have a specific batch session input which only executes once a month; another might be daily, and so on. When sessions are run in the background system, R/3 will use the authorization of the user submitting the background job to check the authorization for the session. So, be sure to submit these jobs with all needed authorizations. If the RSBDCSUB job is manually executed from the usual reporting transaction service SA38, it processes all sessions immediately. Processing Batch Input Sessions job arrives, it automatically checks for those sessions waiting for processing and runs them all immediately. Running Sessions Interactively As indicated earlier, this method of running sessions is normally used when testing, debugging, or correcting sessions. Batch input sessions processed online will use the authorizations of the user running them, which might or might not be the user who generated the session. To process a session online, from the session list screen, select a session and click on the Process icon, or just double click over the session name. The system will display a dialog box for specifying the run mode and some additional functions such as an extended log, setting dynpro standard size, or expert debugging mode. Figure B 3 shows this dialog box.

Processing Batch Input Sessions Process/foreground The system will display all dialog steps and allows you to interactively step through the transactions and correct the possible errors. This is also known as display all mode. Display errors only In this mode, the system will only stop and show the screen for those transactions which have not yet been executed and contain errors. If no errors occur, the system will process the session normally, although online. Background This mode behaves as it would when you submit a batch for immediate processing, without the need of releasing it. The system does not display the dialog steps. The system will give you back control of the SAPGUI as soon as the session has been submitted. Display all mode is normally used in the first tests of the batch input sessions, while Display errors only is used while correcting transactions for sessions already processed. In any case, users can switch display modes interactively. Based on your needs, you must choose one of the three run modes and click on the Process push button. For online step by step processing of the session, you just need to press the Enter key for every screen. The system will perform the new dialog step entering the data recorded in the batch input session. If you want to modify any of the values in the screen, just write over them before pressing the Enter key. To switch from display all mode to display only error mode, enter code /bde in the command field and press Enter. Inversely, to switch from display only error to display all, enter code /bda in the command field.

Results of Sessions Processing Deleting Transactions and Interrupting Online Sessions Processing While processing a session online, you can decide to delete a transaction from the session. To do that, enter code /bdel in the command field. Consider, however, that this action removes the transaction from the session and cannot be executed again if the session is restarted. A delete transaction will only be available in the session log file and within the analysis options in case the session was generated with the KEEP option. A very useful function, especially for testing large batch input sessions, is the /bend code. Entering /bend in the command field cancels the transaction being processed and interrupts the execution of the full session. The system marks then this session as Incorrect, but it's kept in the sessions queue and can be processed again if required. This option can be used for example to run the first few transaction of a large session. When those transactions are tested to determine whether they work correctly as expected, you can cancel the session and submit it to the background processing system. The correct transactions will not be processed again. In case you discover errors in the first few transactions, you can stop the session and solve the problems before resuming execution.
