Another function that can be used to analyze and display the actual status of a batch input session is the summary statistics. From the sessions overview list, select a session and click on the Statistics push button on the application toolbar. The system will display a new screen with the sessions summary. This statistical information is very useful for a quick look at how many transactions have been successfully or incorrectly processed out of the total ones. With this information you can decide whether it's worth processing the incorrect transactions online or if a modification of the batch input program might be necessary.

The system generates a log for all the batch input sessions which have been processed. If the session has not been run, it does not yet have a log. For successfully processed sessions which did not have the KEEP option set, you can display the log from the initial batch input screen (Fig. B 1) by entering the selection criteria and clicking the Log push button on the application toolbar. The system will display a list of sessions, where you can display the log by either double clicking over them or by selecting them and then clicking on the Choose push button. For incorrectly processed sessions, you can display the log from the overview list or the analysis screen by clicking on the Log push button. The sessions log file contains information about the transactions being processed by the session, as well as reports any problems it encounters during the processing. The last part of the log contains summary information about the session.

Normally, batch input sessions are deleted automatically from the sessions queue after they have been successfully processed. Sessions with the KEEP option set are held in the queue until the user or administrator explicitly deletes them. To delete a session, select one from the session overview list and click on the Delete push button on the application toolbar or choose Session Delete from the menu bar. Deleting a session which was processed already will allow you to also delete the session log.

During the processing or the generation of batch input sessions, the system might present some problems, such as the shutdown of the R/3 instances, power failure, and so on, which can lead to the abnormal termination of the batch input sessions. In these special system problems situations, sessions can retain the status Creating or Processing. To find out the actual situation, you can look up the system log, the background job log, or the session log. Normally, you discover that a session terminated abnormally because its status remains the same after a long period of time. If processing a session usually takes one hour at night, and the next morning it is still in the Processing list, it's probably because it has been interrupted due to some system problem. Before restarting a session, make sure that it has truly been abnormally terminated. Also, check with the process monitors whether there is any activity going on in the dialog or background work processes. To restart a session that was interrupted, select the session from the overview list and choose Session Release from the menu bar. The system sets the session status to Processing. Restarting a session is completely safe because the system automatically skips all the transactions which were successfully completed in a previous run. If the system problem interrupted the session generation, the safest way is to delete the session from the queue and run the batch input program again to regenerate the session.
