Installation type means how to distribute the SAP R/3 services among the available servers. This is the subject of Chap. 4. In SAP R/3 terms, an instance is a group of processes that provide some specialized services and with a dispatcher process in charge of distributing the user requests to the appropriate work processes. A SAP installation includes a central instance which by default has the service types dialog, update, enqueue, background, gateway, message, and spool. The names of these services form the acronym DVEBGMS, which you will find often. Notice, though, that update corresponds to V, since Verbuchung is the German term for update. The type and number of work processes can be later configured using specific SAP profile parameters. The server that includes the database management system and the data itself is known as the database instance or database server in SAP terms, which are slightly different than a SAP instance since the processes are database specific ones. A minimal R/3 system consists of a central instance and a database, which are very often located on the same computer, and known commonly as the database server. Notice, however, that the database can be installed in a different host than the central instance, in which case it is known as a stand alone database server. As stated in the chapter introduction, these general installation guidelines are intended for an installation on a central instance with a database (both on the same computer).

Besides the hardware on which to install the system, you need the following SAP installation manuals: Getting Started with your R/3 Installation (<Operating System/Database>) ChecklistInstallation requirements: <Operating System> R/3 Installation on <Operating System><Database> R/3 Installation on UNIX: OS Dependencies Installing SAP Frontend Software for PCs Installing the Online Documentation You also need to have handy the guide for configuring the network (Integration of R/3 Servers in TCP/IP Networks) and, if installing additional languages other than German or English, the Language Import guide. The purpose of this chapter, and in general the objective of the book, is to make the reading of these guides easier and more understandable. However, you must pay attention to the specific details and instructions they contain. 65

Step 4: Installing Hardware, Base Software, and Configuring the Network Of course, you need the installation software kit, which comes with the set of CD ROMs commonly referred to as SAP kernel. This is the first and main CD; it includes the runtime software and the file system templates. Depending on the R/3 release and chosen platform, sometimes it also contains the database runtime software. Presentation. This includes front end presentation software for UNIX, Windows, and optional libraries and software subsets. Database software. DB Export. These CDs (two or more) have the database export files to load the standard SAP data into the system. Report Load. For performance reasons, this CD includes the ABAP loads to speed up execution of programs the first time they are called. Depending on the release and type of installation (upgrade kits differ from initial installation kits), the software package might come bundled with additional CDs such as the "Language import files," "Online documentation," "Documentation print files," and sometimes kernel patches and other support packages, database upgrades, and documentation. The minimum hardware required is a certified supported server with a CD ROM, a network controller, and a minimum of 256 MB of main memory, and about 12 GB of physical disk space. Do not forget a suitable tape drive for making backups. Although it will not be needed until the installation of the central instance, it is time to decide what the name of your SAP R/3 system will be; in other words, decide on the SID (SAP system identification). This name is a three letter word which must conform to SAP naming rules, such as being uppercase and the first character must be a letter. Some values are not allowed: ADD, ALL, ANY, ASC, AUX, B20, B30, BCO, BIN, COM, CON, DBA, EMS, END, EPS, FAX, FOR, GID, INT, KEY, LOG, LPT, MON, NOT, OFF, P30, PRN, PUT, RAW, ROW, SAP, SET, SGA, SHG, SID, TMP, UID, and VAR. Check the manuals or OSS notes for additional values not permitted. (In SAP installation manuals SID is often referred to as SAPSID. Both are the same.) Choose this name carefully, since it must be unique within a group or related SAP systems (usually companywide), and to rename it, the whole system must be reinstalled. A very popular way to name the systems is: Pnn (P01, P11, etc.) for productive systems. Tnn for test systems, and Cnn or Dnn for development systems. But this is just a suggestion. It is also very common to find the company initials in the SAP system name. System types are discussed in detail in Chap. 6, "The Transport System."
