There are several directories containing the files and programs that make up the R/3 systems and that are required for normal execution and operation. The installation process automatically creates these directories, although it is possible to define them manually. Figure 4 3 shows a directory structure under UNIX and Fig. 4 4 shows the same concept under Windows NT on a global host. On dialog instances there is a local path and a global shared path. Both operating systems conceptually have the same directories, although they are implemented differently.

For Windows NT systems, a backslash (\) is used. The main directories under R/3 systems are: The physical parent directory of the whole SAP application (/usr/sap). Under this directory you will find the following directories. The transport directory (/usr/sap/trans). The transport directory is used for transporting objects and customizing settings between R/3 systems. This is a global directory within an R/3 network that must be accessible to all systems of the network. Physically, it will be located in a global transport host (which can be the production central instance, the development system, or any other). UNIX systems implement the sharing of the transport directory using NFS, while on Windows NT sharing is implemented by the definition of the alias SAPTRANSHOST that is assigned to the transport host. More information on this topic can be found in Chap. 6. The SAP system parent directory, <SID>, for example, / usr / sap /C12. If more than one SAP system is installed and different SIDs were installed in the same server, then you would have additional directories below /usr/sap, each one with specific instance details. Beneath /usr/sap/<SID> you have at least two branches: 1. /SYS directory, containing common and global SAP system files. Below you get the profile, global, and exe directories. 2. <INSTANCE_NAME> directory, (DVEBMGS00 in the preceding example) containing instance specific directories: data, log, and work. For dialog instances, common names are D00, D01, and so on. The SAP mount directory /sapmnt is a directory structure useful for sharing the common files with all systems belonging to the same group. It's a useful method for easily exporting or sharing the directories to other instances. Below the /sapmnt directory, there is also the <SID> which at the same time contains the exe, profile, and global directories which are links (UNIX soft links) to the physical directories under /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/ as shown in the preceding figure. Windows NT implements this directory structure by sharing the sapmnt directory, which is then referred to using the path \\SAPGLOBALHOST\sapmnt. There are also directories for the SAP system belonging to the database engine. In the case of Oracle, the whole database system has the /oracle directory as the root for the rest of the needed files. Under the /oracle directory, there are usually two subdirectories: stage, used for database installations and upgrades; and <SID>, for example /oracle/C12, under which the whole database runtime and data files are located. 92

Kernel Directory: What Do These Programs Do Let's get a closer look at the SAP final directories. First the system directories: The exe directory contains all SAP runtime programs and usually additional installed add on programs (for example, the RFC, CPIC, or SAPcomm libraries). The directory includes three additional subdirectories: opt, where optimized programs might reside; dbg, where programs can run under symbolic debuggers; and run, where the actual runtime programs (the R/3 kernel) are located. The global directory contains global or common data managed by the SAP application and shared by all instances, for example, the central system log and the batch jobs log. The profile directory contains the instance profiles: startup profiles, default profiles, and instance specific profiles. The specific instance directories contain mostly temporary data files, which are normally deleted (overwritten) when the SAP instance is restarted. There are some exceptions, such as the local system log (which has some storage limit values indicating when to start a new one). The directories are as follows: The data directory contains mostly virtual storage data for the instance, including the user contexts and roll areas. The log directory contains all the log entries generated by the instance, such as the local system log. Do not confuse the log and work directories when troubleshooting the system. The work directory holds all the error and trace information for the instance processes. Error messages and core dumps are usually left at this location. This directory is very useful for debugging or troubleshooting the system, since it contains the instance startup and shutdown log files and all the work processes log files. These log files are preceded by the dev_prefix. For example, dev_disp is the log file containing the SAP dispatcher messages. You can also see these files from the CCMS monitors.
