Alternatively, it includes three standard settings (Small, Medium, and Large) that can be adjusted according to user needs. Depending on your SAPGUI release, you might find instead two options boxes for selecting fixed fonts, which are used in the application input fields and graphic screens, and another for specifying variable fonts that affect the appearance of field names and toolbars. In any case, in the Preview box, you can see how the fonts will look in the R/3 windows before applying the changes. Changing the Colors of the R/3 Window You can change the colors of various elements of your R/3 window, such as input fields, highlighted fields, and lists. Users can choose from available predefined color palettes or can define their own colors. Be careful when you change colors since only the default settings guarantee that all the information on a screen is legible. The procedure to change colors is slightly different when changing colors in lists. The other changeable elements can be set as follows: From the Options screen, select the Colors in Forms folder. If you haven't changed the settings previously, the Color Palettes field will be defaulted to Standard. The List colors dialog box contains three columns with seven color choices each. The columns belong to different types of text displayed in lists. The types are normal, intensive, and inverse. Table 5 2 shows the color numbers assigned to specific text types and categories.

First, select the color you want to change by clicking over the field or on the radio button to the left. Then, either click on the radio button Text color or Background color. The same method applies to the application toolbar and the status bar. Please notice that if you hide the status bar, all system messages will appear as dialog boxes. This method can be either a pain in the neck or very useful for those users who find it difficult to be aware of the status bar. When finished, press the OK button to confirm the selections or click on the Cancel button to reset your options to the previous settings.

The Screen Layout Menu Configuring Automatic Tabbing Between Fields The R/3 window includes an automatic tabbing feature which can be very useful when users must enter information in many fields and don't want to press the Tab key to move from field to field. When the automatic tabbing feature is enabled, the cursor automatically moves to the next field when you reach the end of an actual input field. AutoTAB only works at the end of an input field. For example, if the a field can hold up to nine characters, and you enter only four, you still have to press the Tab key to move to the next input field. To enable the automatic tabbing, select the Cursor folder under the Options menu, and then select the check box next to Automatic TAB at Field End. The check box works like a toggle; so, to disable the automatic tabbing, deselect the check box. Hiding Grid Lines in Lists You can choose to display or hide grid lines in lists. Lists in the SAP system are represented by screen outputs with lines containing information. There are thousands in the R/3 system. Examples of lists are the output of the user monitoring screen, the jobs overview display, or the output of a report containing the available materials. When you have lists in your screens, you might decide between two types of grid lines to separate the output lines and fields: regular or three dimensional (3 D). To change the display of grid lines in lists, from the Options window, select the Colors in Lists folder. To display grid lines in lists, check the box next to Lines in Lists. To have the 3 D effect on the grid lines, select the 3D Effects check box located in the Colors in Forms folder as well. Determining the Cursor Position When Clicking on a Field R/3 users can decide how they want the cursor to behave when clicking on the blank area of an input field. For instance, the cursor could automatically position itself at the beginning of the field when the user clicks anywhere in a blank field, or it could position itself to the right of any text already entered in the field, considering blank spaces as if they were nulls. Alternatively, users can decide to leave the normal behavior of the cursor positioning, which is to appear exactly where they place it in the field, whether there are blank spaces or not. Determining the behavior of the cursor positioning depends on the type of tasks users perform most frequently. For example, when the screens they most often use require entering data in many empty fields, it is advisable to make the cursor appear at the end of any text when clicking anywhere behind the text. In such cases, if the input fields are empty, the cursor will position automatically at the beginning of the field, ready for entering data. This is the default setting. The other setting is to place the cursor exactly in the field position that the user clicks on with the mouse, whether the field is empty or not. This is more suitable for making lots of modifications in fields which already contain data and when users move across fields using the arrow keys instead of the Tab key or the mouse. Cursor behavior is set by selecting the Cursor folder in Options menu. In this folder there is a check box with the caption Cursor to End of Text on Mouse Click. If this box is checked, the cursor will be positioned at the end of the text of the input field. Otherwise, the cursor will be positioned wherever the user clicks on a field. 129

The Screen Layout Menu Resetting the Default Windows Size The option Default size under the layout menu ( ) adjusts the size of the R/3 window to the default window size. This feature, however, flashes an error message in the status bar if the user does not have the correct windows resolution. And it won't have any effect if the windows still have the default size. The windows size can be changed by following the normal procedures used in any other screen of other windows applications. Changing the Time Display in the Status Bar You can choose whether the system displays the local time or the system response time in the status bar. Response time is the time the R/3 system takes to process a dialog step and present the information back to the users. This feature is located in the menu and behaves like a toggle between the two time displays, meaning that the time display that appears in the menu changes each time you select the feature. In the standard system, the default time display in the status bar is the local time. To change the time display from local time to system response time, select Response time from the menu. The menu automatically closes and the time display area will remain empty until you perform any function in the system (such as a screen change). Then the response time will appear. The figures shown on the status bars are measured in seconds. To change the time display from response time back to local time, select Time from the Using the Clipboard You can transfer the contents of fields onto the clipboard of your windowing environment and then paste them into other fields of the R/3 system or into other windows applications. You can move or copy the contents of fields by using the functions of the Clipboard option located in the menu. The R/3 clipboard functions work very similarly to the clipboard functions of the Windows environment. In many R/3 screens and applications, for example, when working with the ABAP editor, you also have copy and paste functions below the Edit menu. However, options under the Edit menu only work inside the R/3 system and cannot be transferred to other windows applications. The Edit menu usually contains more extensive options than the clipboard. The R/3 clipboard presents four options: Mark, Copy, Cut, and Paste. The Mark option is useful when selecting several fields to copy and paste. Otherwise, just select a field by clicking and dragging the pointer over the text field and select the most appropriate option. When the Mark option is selected, the cursor changes automatically to a crosshair sign. The selection is made by clicking on a corner of the area to copy and holding the mouse and dragging to the opposite corner. The R/3 system will display a rectangle indicating the selected area.
