This second example now uses your PHP function to validate the e-mail address, rather than JavaScript, as in the first example. One small thing to note in this code is that you set the asynchronous flag to false in the call. When you begin working with JavaScript, you will soon learn that not all browsers are created equally. I began my JavaScript debugging endeavors years ago using the Internet Explorer interface. Sadly, doing so can be frustrating. The basic JavaScript error system (see Figure 13-1) for Internet Explorer consists of a pop-up warning saying that an error has occurred with the script on the page. Not only is the error message nondescriptive, but it doesn t tell you exactly where in your code the error occurred. If your JavaScript code is inline in your HTML document, the line numbers will generally match up; but as soon as you use an external JavaScript file, it becomes extremely difficult to pinpoint where an error occurred.
