7.6 OBJECTS AND LVALUES The Annotated C++ Reference Manual [Ellis] states: An object is a region of storage. An lvalue is an expression referring to an object or function. Originally, the terms lvalue and rvalue referred to things that appeared on the left and right sides of assignments. But now lvalue is more general. The simplest examples of lvalues are names of objects, i.e., variables:
