The XPath data model acts on the tree structure of the XML document and, as speci ed in XPath 1.0, provides a conceptual model with little implementation. The data model de ned in XSL Transformations 2.0 also will be used in XPath 2.0 and in XQuery 1.0. This data model has a twofold purpose. First, it de nes the information that can be contained in the input of an XSLT processor (which serves to transform XML into XHTML for display on a browser) or an XQuery processor (for querying an XML document for a certain piece of information that it may contain). The error category provides a mechanism for capturing an error value that allows identi cation of an error condition.
