For many types of products and services, a customer returns again and again to buy more products. Instead of measuring customers by the value of a single sale, consider the total value from all sales. A web server records every action into a file: which file was requested, the time of request, any errors that occurred, and so on. Raw log files are a long list of numbers and are indecipherable to humans. Web stats software converts these numbers into tables and graphs. Log file tools evolved into analytics tools. Multivariate testing tools let you create permutations of a page and then test all the versions to find which version performs better. MVT tools are either brute force (they test all versions) or they use Taguchi Method, which tests a subset. Google Site Optimizer is a free MVT tool. Offermatica is an enterprise MVT tool. When someone clicks a link on a web page to get to another web page, the first web page is the referer. Although the correct spelling is referrer, the variable is spelled referer. A regular expression (regex) is a method for describing strings of text or numbers. This allows manipulation of the string. Regular expressions are used by programmers and database administrators. When someone searches for a term and the term appears on a web page, the search engine notes the page as relevant. This only means the keyword appears on the page.
