Getting iTunes Updated
If you have previously installed iTunes on your computer, you should check for an updated version. Follow these steps to update your iTunes software. NOTE: You will need iTunes version 9.1 or higher in order to sync with your iPad. Next, we will show you how to make sure you have the most up-to-date version of iTunes on your computer. 1. Start the iTunes software.
Go to the Help menu (on your PC) or iTunes (the left-most menu on the Mac) and then select Check for Updates.
CHAPTER 26: Your iTunes User Guide
If you are not using the latest version, then you will see a screen similar to the one shown to the right. Click Download iTunes to be taken to the Apple Software Update screen (see Figure 26 62). On the Apple Software Update screen, make sure the iTunes selection is checked. Next, uncheck any software you do not want to install and click the Install button in the lower right corner.
4. 5.

TIP: The software downloads can be 50 megabytes (MB) or more in size. We highly recommend doing the software downloads and updates from a high-speed Internet connection. If everything goes smoothly, your iTunes and related software should be automatically updated with the latest version.
iTunes Troubleshooting
In this section, we will provide a few tips and tricks to help you with some common issues you might encounter when using iTunes. We also have an entire chapter devoted to troubleshooting (see 25) if you cannot find answers to the problems you encounter in this section.
What to Do If the iTunes Auto Update Fails
The automatic update may fail when you have the About iTunes.rtf text file open or you have another related file open that cannot be closed by the installer automatically. If you locate and close the problem file, you should be able to retry the automatic update. If you see a message similar to the one shown to the right, you will have to manually install the update. Follow these steps to do so.
CHAPTER 26: Your iTunes User Guide
From the Apple Software Update screen, select the Tools menu and then Download Only. You will see the download status screen shown in Figure 26 63.
Once the download is finished, a new window should pop up, showing the downloaded files ready for you to manually install (see Figure 26 64).
Figure 26 64. Apple Software Update manual install folder (Windows PC)
To manually start the install, double-click the iTunes installer file, as shown in Figure 26 64. The file may be slightly different than the one shown in the figure (e.g., iTunes.msi or iTunes64.msi), depending on the operating system on your computer. From here, you need to follow the iTunes installation screens that were presented earlier in this chapter.
