The destination device would then generate a request (using the UAC function) and would maintain the state of that request throughout the dialog. The UAC generates a request (the beginnings of a session establishment) when the subscriber dials his or her phone, or uses some other application for communicating with the network. This includes e-mail, instant messaging, text messaging, and accessing the Web. The UAC interprets the commands received from these applications, including the addresses input by the subscriber and/or the application. The addresses may be simple words (such as Travis selected from an address book). The UAC must then determine what this address is and how to route to this address. The application (address book in this case) would provide more details behind the address, such as travis.russell@tcg.com, but the UAC must resolve this address to an IP address. This is done prior to routing into the network. Therefore the UAC must make a lot of decisions regarding the treatment of a session and how it is going to be routed through the network. We will be discussing much more about the role of the UAC throughout this book.

The UAS responds to requests from other UACs. Think of the UAS as the recipient of a request. The UAS must then send responses (either 1xx/2xx, or failure responses). The UAS can also be a stand-alone function; some devices may not have the UAC capability but do have UAS capability. Some application servers, for example, may have the ability to respond to a request but be unable to generate a request. The UAS may respond with capabilities of the device, and of course whether or not it accepts a session invitation. The UAS may act independently or in conjunction with device applications. For example, if a subscriber is being asked to join in an instant messaging session, the instant messaging application may allow the subscriber to accept or reject the invitation. The UAS would then communicate the acceptance or rejection back to the UAC that originated the request. When a request is received by the UAS, it first determines if the method being sent is supported. For example, if the method MESSAGE is sent, the UAS must determine if the device supports messaging and therefore supports this method. If the UAS determines it cannot support the method, it will send a response along with parameters identifying the methods it does support. This is part of the capability discovery. The UAS must also determine if there are headers contained within the request that it does not understand. If there are headers it does not understand, the message is not rejected but processed, with the exception of the headers the UAS cannot process. This is necessary because proxies are also considered user agents, and therefore there are many parameters within a request not intended for a proxy that it would not understand. There are a minimum set of headers that any UAS must be able to understand and process, to ensure that all devices will work in the SIP domain. This allows devices to be added to the network even if they do not support proprietary functions (and therefore proprietary SIP extensions).

Vendors who build SIP devices may also introduce SIP methods and headers that are understood only by their software. This could be a problem when another vendor s equipment is introduced into the network (such as a proxy, or application server). For this reason, the UAS will ignore methods and headers it does not understand and process as much of the message as possible. Since all devices support a minimum set of SIP methods and parameters, all devices are guaranteed the ability to communicate with one another and generate requests and responses. This is a unique capability of SIP and its user agents not found in many other types of networks.
