MAX-FORWARDS is used to prevent looping of messages. When a message is created (either a request or a response), this header is set to 70. As the message passes through each proxy in the network, the value is decremented by 1, until the value reaches 0. If a proxy receives a message with a MAX-FORWARDS value of 0, the message is discarded. This can also be used by systems that are measuring or monitoring the network to troubleshooting routing of SIP messages. By measuring the value of the MAXFORWARDS header at various points in the network, one could derive where looping is occurring and identify proxies that are causing circular routing.

Privacy This header is used to identify when subscribers wish to hide their identity from other networks. This could be the case when a subscriber wishes to maintain secrecy for certain communications, but of course it can be used for illegitimate purposes as well. The header is provided in the specifications for legitimate purposes, allowing subscribers to provide a different identity in the REQUEST-URI than they do in the TO header. The TO header of course is displayed to the calling party, while the REQUEST-URI is used by the network for routing and authentication purposes.

Priority This header was added for providing emergency calls priority over normal traffic; however, the implementation of this header is operator specific. Therefore, since it has not been defined for global usage, it may or may not provide priority service for, say, emergency calls (such as 911 calls in the U.S.). There is other work that is being done to define a mechanism for preemption and emergency priority services in the event of a catastrophe that are not defined here (this is still a work in progress), but this header is explained so that an operator can provide an on-net-type service if they wish. For example, designers of an enterprise network may elect to provide an Emergency Alert System within their own private network as an additional service to their subscribers. To ensure their emergency messages were routed as a high priority, they could implement the use of the PRIORITY header. This would allow an enterprise network to give a higher priority to its emergency messages than it would to normal messages. The RFC defines some suggested values for the PRIORITY header of normal, nonurgent, urgent, and emergency. Their use is completely dependent on the operator, although the IETF does recommend that the use of emergency be limited to lifethreatening situations. The use of the SUBJECT header allows a text message to be included, as shown here:
