of this book, so we won t go into those details. Once the device has obtained its IP address, a SIP application is launched and the device then sends its address information to the SIP registrar. The REGISTER message is routed through the network according to local policy, using loose routing typically. In simple SIP networks, the RECORD-ROUTE headers are not used with this method, and therefore any RECORD-ROUTE headers will be ignored by the proxies. However, in IMS networks strict routing is used and the RECORD-ROUTE headers are used for recording the path of a registration. The UAC within the device will use the SIP REGISTER method for sending both the IP address as well as the public identity to be bound with the IP address. From that point forward all requests and responses addressed to that public identity will be sent to the IP address specified, until either the registration expires, or the location changes and the device registers the new address. The binding occurs when the UAC places the public identity (or address of record) in the TO header and the IP address in the CONTACT header. This information is then stored in the location server behind the registrar. If the device is trying to bind multiple public identities to the same IP address, it can send a REGISTER message with multiple CONTACT headers containing the other public identities. The REGISTER method can be used by only one device. In other words, one REGISTER cannot be used to register multiple devices; only multiple identities to the same device. The registration is then maintained until expiration, which is defined in the EXPIRES header. The EXPIRES field provides the amount of time that a registration is to be kept. When more than half of the time has lapsed, the UAC will either send a new REGISTER to renew the registration time or allow the expiration of the current registration. Default expiration time is one hour unless specified otherwise. The EXPIRES field in the CONTACT header applies to each address in the header. The UAC can also manually expire the registration by sending the REGISTER message again, containing the CONTACT header with the address to be expired, and an EXPIRES field with a value of 0. To retrieve the current bindings from the registrar, a REGISTER is sent without the CONTACT header. The address of record is provided (public address) so that it can be correlated to the bindings currently stored. The response will then contain the CONTACT header for each IP address currently bound to the public identity. The location of the registrar can be discovered in a number of ways. One method is to configure the address of the registrar within the device itself. This makes sense for some types of devices that will most likely be in a fixed location, such as an IP access device supporting VoIP. The registrar address is shipped in the configuration of the device so that when the subscriber plugs his or her device into their broadband access, the device automatically sends the registration information to the registrar. Another method is to route the registrations according to the domain portion of the public identity. For example, my own address of travisruss@aol.com would force registration messages to be routed to aol.com. The domain is identified in the request-URI of the message.
