the TAG value will be the same value in the response, allowing the UAC to correlate responses to requests. There are other identifiers though, as you will see. The UAS will add its own TAG value to the TO header, which is used by the UAS to correlate requests and responses. However, both entities will also use the dialog ID for correlation and management of the dialog between the two entities. The dialog ID as we discussed earlier is calculated using both TAG values and the CALL-ID header value. This then allows the UAC and the UAS to correlate requests/responses for specific sessions. The ACK is sent by the UAC when it receives a final response from the UAS. The final response does not necessarily have to be acceptance of the session. The ACK will contain a BRANCH identifier found in the VIA header. This is used by the stateful proxies in the path of the request so that they can correlate requests and responses. This is necessary because proxies may send responses (such as provisional responses) back to the UAC. The BRANCH field is used by these proxies to correlate requests and responses. The proxy adds the BRANCH value to the VIA header as the message is forwarded by the proxy; therefore, if there are multiple stateful proxies, there will be multiple BRANCH fields. The VIA header also contains the address of the proxy. The UAC may continue sending a request until it receives a response. Each UAC starts an internal timer, and when that timer expires, the UAC resends the request. This continues until the UAC receives a response from the UAS. We will discuss responses in more detail in the next session, but this is important to remember because retransmission of requests could have adverse effects on the network if provisions are not made for this. The UAC may also send a single request to multiple addresses. This could be the case for a broadcast, for example. Forking proxies could also be used to distribute requests to multiple destinations. When this occurs, the forking proxy is responsible for managing the responses from each of the UASs. The request is received by the proxy, which then forks the response to other destinations according to its own internal routing instructions. The UAC, therefore, is not aware of the additional addresses that the request may have been sent to, so the forking proxy must maintain the state of the request in association with each individual UAS. This, again, is the purpose of attaching a BRANCH field to the VIA header when the message is received by the proxy. The proxy is then able to use this value to correlate responses with the request that it forks. The UAC addresses the request according to the destination public address. This address is contained, then, in the request-URI found in the start line of the request. Note that the request-URI is not always the final destination of the request. It can also be the next hop within the network, depending on the implementation. We will discuss routing in the SIP network a little later on. The request-URI is critical to routing the request, because not only does it identify the address of the recipient (or the next hop in the network) but it also identifies the domain to which the request is to be routed. This means that the first proxy to receive the request must determine how to route the request from the domain name in the address. The proxy, therefore, will query DNS to find the address for the access point within the domain.
