Now that we have covered establishing a SIP session, let s look at how SIP requests and responses are routed through the network. A unique feature of SIP is its ability to locate a subscriber anywhere in the network. This form of mobility is something that is lacking in switched networks, and what has helped increase the popularity of IP-based telephony. Mobility is an important capability in modern communications, allowing users to receive their phone calls, e-mails, and other communications no matter where they are, as long as they have a network connection. The proxy is used for routing messages within a SIP network. The proxy can also provide a redirect service, where it provides alternative addresses for reaching a subscriber device. These alternative addresses are stored by the registrar function, which is responsible for receiving a subscriber registration in the network and storing that information for other proxies. The registrar can then provide this function of redirect. The proxy can operate in two modes; stateless and stateful. A stateless proxy simply routes messages received and erases any information regarding the message. This is the simplest form of proxy, and also the most insecure of implementations (we will explain security in 7). The stateless proxy maintains a record of each transaction it receives, including the state of the session. This means also recording requests that it forwards so that it knows where to send responses. Typically with stateful proxies, responses are sent using the same path as the request. This is so that the stateful proxy will be able to maintain the state of a dialog and its associated sessions. The stateful proxy also acts as a UAS, returning provisional responses and forwarding requests on to their final destinations. All forking proxies are stateful proxies. There are a number of different means for determining proper routing for a message, but we will focus on two defined methods: loose routing and strict routing. Loose routing makes routing decisions based on available routes and network conditions. The Internet is a good example of where loose routing is used. There is no dedicated path for a message to be routed. This form of routing is acceptable for most forms of communications, but when voice and other real-time services are provided, there are good reasons to implement strict routing. Strict routing is not as favorable because there are caveats to using it. Strict routing will use deterministic routing for the registration, but all subsequent requests and responses must use the same path recorded during registration.
