By supporting extensions to the protocol, vendors are given greater freedom to create features and functionality that the standards bodies may not have thought of, while still ensuring interoperability in a mixed vendor network. This is also an advantage to network operators because it allows them to implement multivendor networks while still realizing the maximum in features and applications. Just as important is the need to transport SIP messages through many different networks. This means that all networks must be able to understand and process a minimum set of SIP headers required for routing the message through the network. The minimum set of requirements for SIP networks is defined in the RFC 3261. All vendors must conform to this minimum set of requirements and messages to ensure that the SIP messages that their equipment generates can be processed and routed through many networks end to end. However, SIP introduces many more possibilities. SIP can be used to introduce many new features and applications that traditional networks cannot support today. SIP is a communications protocol that allows network entities to communicate instructions regarding any services and any media with one another. Support for additional headers in the SIP protocol allows vendors to create their own unique applications and to support those applications through SIP signaling. Keep in mind that SIP does not actually enable anything beyond providing the communications between all of the servers and proxies that are responsible for actually delivering services.

By allowing new headers to be added at will by any vendor, the creators of SIP have provided a framework on which network operators and vendors can build and still be ensured that they are able to connect and communicate with any other network in the world. This is the concept behind SIP extensions. SIP extensions can also be proprietary and known only to a single vendor. The extensions are then developed to support specific features and functionality that are developed only by that vendor, and therefore the extensions are not public knowledge. The vendor can still route SIP messages in a standard SIP network, and any network element that receives a SIP message with headers it does not understand continues to process the SIP message, ignoring the headers it does not support.

A vendor can also choose to have their extensions included in the standards by publishing an RFC for a specific application or function and submitting it to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for consideration. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) also provides a valuable service to all those wishing to understand what extensions have been filed, offering a listing of all documented and ratified SIP methods, headers, and extensions. The 3GPP has also submitted a fair number of standards identifying new applications and features based on SIP. The work of the 3GPP is very specific to implementations in a wireless environment, while TISPAN is developing standards relative to wireline networks implementing SIP. All of these organizations are focusing on a specific network architecture known as the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), which is based on SIP. There are also a number of RFCs that are published identifying how network elements should handle various extensions, or more accurately how a specific function or application works and what extensions have been identified to support the application. The IANA is a good source for finding these RFCs, at www.iana.org. Of course the IETF is always the best source for all RFCs, but it can be confusing to find the right document. The 3GPP also has numerous documents published for SIP implementations in traditional wireless and wireline networks. The IANA Web site will provide a listing that proves to be quite useful to anyone working in SIP. Of course there are still proprietary extensions developed by vendors with no intention of ever publishing the extensions. These extensions are understood only by the vendors equipment and therefore will not be supported by other vendors systems. There is no need to document these extensions in a public forum. You will need to request the documentation from the respective vendors.
