PremierBank has grown over a number of years through acquisitions and mergers, which have resulted in a heterogeneous and complex IT environment. The IT environment consists of an older back-end system as well as newer, more modern applications such Java/J2EE applications. Some of the functionalities of these applications have been exposed as Web Services. In particular, the Account Open process has been exposed as a SOAP/HTTP Web Service. However, a number of issues still require further development/deployment in the area of connectivity. A careful, detailed analysis has identified four pressing requirements that need new development/deployment solutions. We discuss each of these four requirements and their suggested solutions in the following four subsections.

The current connectivity environment at PremierBank does not allow easy access to a process or application from different channels. We define a channel as a particular combination of message type (for example, SOAP) and protocol (for example, HTTP). There is a current requirement to be able to access the Account Open process from a number of different environments, including rich clients, intranet browsers, and Internet browsers, in a manner that is suitable for each consumer application (that is, the consumer application for the Account Open process Web Services) without the need for a different mechanism for each access channel. This requirement results from the PremierBank IT environment, which has browser-based intranet and Internet users, interactive voice-response system users, and Microsoft .NET application platform users. The solution requires a mechanism that encapsulates different access mechanisms so as to insolate other architecture and development teams from the different access styles used within the IT environment at PremierBank.

Multichannel access to existing services
Because an ESB can interact with multiple channels and can convert the different message types from each channel into a single canonical format that is passed to the Account Open process, deployment of an ESB will clearly address the requirement for multiple-channel access of the Account Open process. This solution is shown in Figure 8.18. The architecture shown in Figure 8.18 will also facilitate the integration of additional channels in the future. Note that WebSphere Message Broker (WMB) has been chosen as an implementation of the ESB. This choice is driven by the requirement to integrate a diverse set of applications/channels as well as the heavy volume expected in the use of the Account Open process.
Open Standards Based Internal Access
PremierBank s remote branch offices need to issue a controlled set of service requests to headquarters. Some of these requests are standards based (that is, SOAP based), whereas others are XML-formatted requests that need to be mapped to SOAP-based requests. There is a need to exercise centralized control over these requests. The applications in the remote branch offices are all modern applications that use JMS (Java Message Service) as the transport protocol. However, the headquarters applications that receive these requests all require SOAP over HTTP. The architecture of the solution is shown in Figure 8.19. This figure shows an ESB employed in each remote branch office that is linked to

a registry/repository at the headquarters. Because we need support for both Web Services (SOAP over HTTP) and JMS in this scenario, WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus (WESB) is a good fit for deployment as an ESB on the service consumer side. This choice of ESB is also proper in regard to the cost effectiveness of the solution because each branch office will need an ESB and WESB is a low-cost choice. Another advantage of using WESB is that it is easy to set up. For the registry/repository, IBM WebSphere Service Registry and Repository (WSRR) can be used at the headquarters. In addition to employing WESB, each branch office also employs an SOA Management agent that sends management data to the headquarters domain for control purposes. At the headquarters, the control data is received and stored. The ability to monitor service calls is provided by IBM Tivoli Composite Application Manager for SOA.
