For integrating mainframe applications with a large number of applications, we describe two approaches based on ESB. We consider two approaches in this category. The first approach relies on application server based ESB, such as IBM WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus (WESB). Next, we discuss some general features and considerations of the integration schemes described in this chapter, as well as various point-to-point options and two ESB-based options. Mainframe Application Types Two main types of applications run on mainframe computers: applications that run under IMS (IBM s Information Management System) and applications that run on CICS (IBM s Customer Information Control System). This is a complementary adapter to the IMS TM resource adapter, which is discussed later in this chapter.
