scaling down rather than up. Rather than focusing a network on a very dense, highly centralized switching architecture with its incumbent and astronomical expense, softswitch architecture offers far greater flexibility (read cost savings) over Class 4 or 5 switches. Originally, telephone switches were centralized and needed to be very dense to achieve the maximum economies of scale and to save money on real estate and maintenance. At the lowest end of the scalability range for softswitch architecture would be an IP phone, which constitutes the equivalent of one DS0 on a telephone switch (see Figure 6-5). Contrast that with the minimum configuration for a Nortel DMS-250 Class 4 switch at 480 DS0s. The service provider does not need to invest in a switch to service a customer with an IP phone. The service provider provides only the IP connection or, at a minimum, the proxy and application server to complete the call over the IP network (that could include the public Internet). A data service provider provides that connection (a data local exchange carrier [DLEC] or an application service provider [ASP]).

Another revolutionary approach of interim architecture is the inclusion of VoIP gateways as replacement technology to the Class 4 switch for long-distance applications. Figure 6-6 details this solution. Refer back to Figure 6-1 detailing the PSTN and the architecture for Class 4 and 5 networks. Rather than route traffic to a Class 4 switch, the traffic goes to a VoIP gateway for packetization and routing over an IP network.

This architecture could be taken one step further with the inclusion of a VoIP gateway colocated at every Class 5 switch (see Figure 6-7). For many service providers, this would pose the advantage of eliminating backhaul or hairpins, that is, the interswitch transportation on expensive circuitswitched networks. This configuration could prove especially useful in linking rural or outlying communities by using less dense VoIP gateways (small office/home office [SOHO] or enterprise grade) described in 3, Softswitch Architecture or It s the Architecture, Stupid! In these settings, the central office may consist of a private branch exchange (PBX). Such a PBX configured with an internal or external VoIP gateway could prove more cost effective for the service provider than the highly centralized, legacy Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) structure. This would be especially valuable for an Internet service provider (ISP) that wanted to leverage their investment in their existing infrastructure and customer base by offering long-distance services. This is accomplished by the installation of a low-density media gateway at the central office and the trunk side of their gateway connecting to their existing IP connection. Refer to Figure 6-6 for details of this architecture.
Scaling Down for Class 5 or Central Office Bypass Applications
Scaling down rather than up becomes truly revolutionary in the Class 5 bypass, also known as Class 5 replacement applications (see Figure 6-8). Referring back to Figure 6-5, in an architecture where all subscribers have an IP phone, no switch or media gateway is necessary. This has the

potential to make a Class 5 switch obsolete (but not soon). This network would be comprised of IP phones and their data connections as the form of access. A softswitch or a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) application performs the switching. Transport is in the form of the IP network, including the Internet. This scenario assumes what is a highly futuristic setting at the time of this writing (mid-2002), given that the access portion for over 90 percent of all residences, for example, are controlled by Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs) via a central-office-centric architecture. A form of broadband IP or Internet connection would make this possible via a digital subscriber line (DSL), cable modem, or a fiber-to-the-home connection to the residence.
