gateway consists of one to four ports for an analog telephone (RJ-11 connection). The residential gateway, if it does not have one integrated, connects to a residential router in the case of a DSL application or set-top box in the case of a cable modem. Some cable modems have a residential media gateway built in. Once the voice stream is packetized in the residential media gateway, it is largely independent of Class 4 and 5 switches, unless the call is terminated on the PSTN (see Figure 6-9). The next step up in scalability regarding a Class 5 replacement or bypass would consist of aggregating residential lines at a media gateway located near the residence. The simplest scenario would be the installation of a media gateway in a pedestal found at most suburban street corners. Rather than aggregate multiple copper wires into a T1 or T3 for transmission to the central office, the media gateway would aggregate those lines into an IP connection (physically an Ethernet connection), packetize the voice stream, and connect with the IP network. Because the switching function is performed by a softswitch over a distributed architecture network, it is not necessary to route the call via a Class 5 switch for a local call or via a Class 4 switch for a long-distance call. In this instance, the softswitch can be described as a classless switch, because geography is meaningless. It is not necessary to break out the call as being completed within a certain geography that in the past was limited by copper wire and Class 4 or 5 switching. It should be noted here that not any media gateway will work for this application. Such a media gateway would have to be environmentally hardened to withstand the stresses of high and low temperatures. It would also have to have a chip set engineered for the more demanding rigors of a Class

5 application. One such demand is the need to recognize dual-tone multifrequency (DTMF) tones, which is not present in all media gateways.
Access Switching
The access switching application provides a solution for next-generation end-office switching, using a Next-Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC) in the role of the access media gateway. The access (softswitch) switch acts as the Signaling System 7 (SS7) service switching point (SSP), terminating SS7 signaling to and from the PSTN. It also provides call processing, billing, services, management, and signaling services to the service provider, leveraging existing installed NGDLC equipment for bearer resources. From a PSTN network perspective, the access (softswitch) switch performs the role of an end-office switch. The following end-office capabilities would be provided by an access (softswitch) switching application:
