The signaling gateway then routes SCCP messages to the remote IP endpoint. If redundant IP endpoints exist, the signaling gateway(s) can load share among active IP endpoints using a round-robin approach. Note that the load sharing of TCAP messages occurs only for the first message in a TCAP dialog; subsequent TCAP messages in the same dialog are always sent to the IP endpoint selected for the first message, unless endpoints share state information and the signaling gateway is aware of the message allocation policy of the IP endpoints. The signaling gateway may also perform Global Title Translation (GTT) to determine the destination of an SCCP message. The signaling gateway routes on the global title, that is, the digits present in the incoming message, such as the called party number or the mobile subscriber identification number. For connection-oriented transport, SCCP and SUA interface at the signaling gateway to associate the two connection sections needed for a connection-oriented data transfer between an SS7 signaling end point and an IP endpoint. Messages are routed by the signaling gateway to SS7 signaling points based on the destination point code (in the MTP-3 address field) and to IP endpoints based on the IP address (in the SCTP header). SUA can also be used to transport SCCP user information between IP endpoints directly rather than via the signaling gateway. The signaling gateway is needed only to enable interoperability with SS7 signaling in the switched circuit network. If an IP resident application is connected to multiple signaling gateways, multiple routes may exist to a destination in the SS7 network. In this case,

the IP endpoint must monitor the status of remote signaling gateways before initiating a message transfer.7 M3UA over SCTP can be used in a VoIP network to provide interworking with the external SS7 network for ISUP. The chief components are the application server (AS), application server process (ASP), routing key, and network appearance (see Table 9-1). Transporting TCAP over IP: SS7 TCAP-User Adaptation Layer (TUA) The TCAP-User Adaptation Layer (TUA) is an SS7 signaling user adaptation layer for providing TCAP-user signaling over SCTP.

In ISDN, user signaling such as Q.931 is carried by the Q.921 data link layer. The equivalent SIGTRAN specification in an IP network is IUA.

Component Application server (AS)
Description A logical entity handling signaling for a particular scope. An AS can be a logical entity within a call agent that handles ISUP signaling for a particular SS7 DPC/OPC/CIC range. A process instance of an application server acting as an active or standby process. An ASP could be that process within a softswitch that is handling ISUP signaling. The ASP has an SCTP endpoint and it can be spread across multiple IP addresses. In a robust network, at least one ASP should be active and at least one standby ASP should exist for a given application. A set of SS7 parameters that identifies the signaling for a given AS. If a given AS is to handle ISUP signaling for a particular combination of an OC/DPC/CIC range, then that range is the routing key. Within the AS, at least one ASP will actively handle the signaling. A mechanism for separating signaling traffic between an SG and an ASP where all traffic uses the same underlying SCTP association.
