That intelligence is provided through the use of databases in a network. The foundation of the IN/AIN architecture is SS7. IN/AIN technology uses an embedded base of stored, program-controlled switching systems and the SS7 network. At the same time, IN/AIN technology enables the separation of service-specific functions and data from other network resources. This feature reduces the dependency on switching system vendors for software developments and delivery schedules. write their own while interoperating with the features of the PSTN via SS7. This is potentially the greatest advantage to a service provider presented by softswitch technology. 2, The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), covers the IN/AIN in greater detail (see Figure 10-2).
Service Creation Environment
The simple transport of long-distance voice is highly commoditized and offers low margins to service providers. Without services, next-generation switches would not be able to generate the voice revenue that currently provides 80 percent of the overall service provider revenue.2 The key to high margins in the converging market is rapid service creation. The service providers that can differentiate themselves from the competition with unique services will win market share and profitable revenue margins from those services. In the legacy market, the offering of such services has been dictated by the switch vendors (no more than two to three in the North American market). The switch vendors have had little incentive to enable their customers (the long-distance carriers) to roll out new services in a rapid and flexible manner.

Softswitch changes this scenario. By virtue of its open standards interface, softswitch enables service providers to quickly create and roll out new services. The structure of softswitch architecture makes it possible for service providers to integrate applications from the softswitch vendor or thirdparty vendors, or even develop their own in house. The inclusion of the option to write custom application programming interfaces (APIs) on a softswitch enables a service provider to write only those custom APIs that are applicable to a given service at a given location. In addition to interoperability between gateways and softswitches, the APIs are standardized to enable any third-party developer the ability to create applications on top of the softswitch (see Figure 10-3). Service creation enables the development of new service building blocks and the assembly of services from these building blocks, typically using one or more commercially available, off-the-shelf tools, such as an integrated development environment (IDE). The concept here is modularity, where a service provider can mix and match components in their network regardless of the vendors involved. If the voice mail platform of a next-generation service provider is not working to the satisfaction of that service provider, it can be replaced by a competing voice mail platform. This also holds true for media gateways, signaling gateways, and so on. Gone are the days of monolithic, single-vendor networks. Next-generation network services will
