Some media gateways may also include media server functions. If the required resources are available on a media gateway, an application server can request these media functions via a call control entity. Typically, these functions include DTMF collection and generation, call progress tone generation and detection, and audio playback and recording. Media processing can occur at either a media gateway or a media server. Gateways are always located at the edge of the network, but media servers can be located at the edge or in the core. The reader may want to refer back to 5 to review SIP. Call control entities, such as gateways, softswitches, and IP phones, act as SIP UAs. Application servers may act as SIP entities: UAs, redirect servers, proxy servers, or third-party call controllers (back-to-back UAs). All entities may communicate directly or through proxy servers. A register mechanism is required to enable an application server to inform a call control entity of its availability. Alternatively, a call control entity may be statically configured with the address information of an application server. The general flow of events from a call control function to an application server function is illustrated in Figure 10-11 and is described as follows. The call control function determines that a call is to be handed off to an application server function (that is, send an INVITE) for enhanced services processing. the application server function based on the trigger information and relays the call to the application server function, including the appropriate call information. The application server function receives the call and invokes the corresponding enhanced service. Next, the application server function can perform any of the actions in Table 10-3. In addition to the previous actions, an application server may initiate calls based on some other input, such as a web action, email, presence notification, or instant message. This enables an application server to support third-party call control. An application server provides an interface to the user via the web, email, presence, instant message, and so on. A user can then initiate actions that are received by the application server, which, acting on behalf of a user, initiates the actions using SIP. This capability provides for support of web or message-based call control, enabling powerful and exciting applications. Basic SIP, in conjunction with call control extensions, can provide a mechanism for enabling a call control function to hand off calls to an application server for call control and enhanced services processing. An application server can optionally request access to the media stream, interacting with a media server. After processing, an application server can transfer a call back through a call control entity and disconnect itself from the call. This provides a powerful mechanism for enabling new and exciting enhanced services, including services that require access to the media path.

SIP function Redirection
Description Redirects the call by sending a new destination address back to the call control function. This mechanism can be used to implement translation- and routing-oriented services. Assigns a media resource from a media server function and orders the call control function to connect the media path to it. After the user interaction with the media resource is complete, the application can transfer the call to a new destination and drop out of the call. This mechanism can be used to implement media-oriented services, such as calling card and fax store/ forward services. Sends the call back through a call control function. This enables the application to monitor all subsequent call events. This mechanism can be used to implement event-oriented services, such as debit card and timing services.
