Energy-Efficient Home Systems than units sold 20 years ago. The average conventional water heater lasts approximately 15 years. Instead of purchasing a conventional water heater, consider purchasing a solar water heater a better option. The most advanced solar water heaters require little or no energy. The water is heated by the sun and stored in an insulated container similar to a conventional heater. Solar heaters can be either passive (Figure 4-6) or active collectors (Figure 4-7).
Solar Water Heater
Solar hot water collectors (Figure 4-8) are visible roof-mounted units that look similar to other types of solar panels. Instead of capturing the sunlight to produce electricity, the heat of the sun is captured and used to heat water or another solution. Solar hot water systems are designed for simplicity and efficiency. Solar hot water systems use the sun s energy to heat water directly or indirectly via solar panels mounted in a position that will allow direct, long-term sun exposure. The sun heats antifreeze in the panels that then heats water via a heat exchanger. A heat exchanger allows the two different liquids to transfer heat but does not allow the fluids to commingle.

Energy-Efficient Home Systems Active solar hot water heaters use electricity to power pumps to circulate the fluids through the system. Active systems are differentiated in three ways: a direct system that uses pumps to circulate water through collectors, an indirect system that pumps antifreeze through the solar collectors, or a drain-back system that heats the water and allows the water to drain into the holding tank. The active system provides the best comfort in mild climates, and the indirect and drain-back systems work well in colder climates. Installing this type of product requires knowledgeable and experienced professionals. In addition, to qualify for tax rebates, you may be required to hire a certified solar installer to do the work. When evaluating whether a solar water heater will work in your home, consider the following: Is direct sunlight available to the area of installation all year round What type of system do you need, and what capacity Does this type of system fit your lifestyle What kinds of tax rebates or credits are available for each type of system What are the maintenance requirements of each system What is the final cost
