In business, when a convergence occurs, fortunes are made, as many independent factors unite to create an opportunity of unprecedented proportion. The dramatic rise in oil prices, global warming, increased energy demand, traditional inefficient home building, and many other factors are converging to create unparalleled opportunities for alternative energy sources. You can participate in this convergence and therefore benefit personally. In this convergence, renewable energy (Figure 2-5) will eventually replace traditional, nonrenewable forms of energy. You ll remember from 1 that the sun produces and delivers more energy in one hour than the world uses in one year. Figure 2-6 shows that the most populous areas in the world receive solar energy both efficiently and effectively. Solar energy is a technically viable option worldwide, but today s initial cost is prohibitive for most of the world s people.

Passive solar is a form of energy that you already use; it s covered extensively in 5. In the dead of winter, for example, even on an extremely cold day, I can open the blinds on the south-facing windows of my home, and this simple adjustment will increase the temperature in my rooms by 2.4 C or 5 F just by opening the blinds. It doesn t get any simpler or cost effective than this. Throughout the United States, solar power can be used as a primary source of energy during all four seasons (Figure 2-13).
Other Forms of Energy
Three other viable forms of energy are available on our planet: wind, geothermal, and tidal power.
Wind Power
Wind, an all-but-forgotten form of energy, is neither new nor revolutionary. Wind has powered sailing vessels for at least 5,500 years. Windmills have a history of at least 2,500 years, and have been used to grind grain, pump water, and create mechanical assistance in manufacturing.
