The establishments in this sector are often described as farms, ranches, dairies, greenhouses, nurseries, orchards, or hatcheries. A farm may consist of a single tract of land or a number of separate tracts which may be held under different tenures. For example, one tract may be owned by the farm operator and another rented. It may be operated by the operator alone or with the assistance of members of the household or hired employees, or it may be operated by a partnership, corporation, or other type of organization. The sector distinguishes two basic activities: agricultural-production and agricultural-support activities. Agricultural-production activities includes establishments performing the complete farm or ranch operation, such as farm owner-operators, tenant farm operators, and sharecroppers. Agricultural-support activities include establishments that perform one or more activities associated with farm operation, such as soil preparation, planting, harvesting, and management, on a contract or fee basis.

POTENTIAL TECHNOLOGIES AND STRATEGIES
As shown in the table, the recycling rate for this sector is approximately 24 percent. As derived from the solid waste evaluation model discussed in Chap. 12, the equation that estimates the annual waste generation per year per employee for this sector can be calculated from the following: Tons of solid waste generated per year = 1.29 number of employees 0.27
22.3 Economics
The agriculture sector operates on very tight budgets; this is a double-edged sword for the sector because there is a large incentive to cut costs and operate more ef ciently, but at the same time funding is generally limited for capital investments to reduce waste. However, economic waste reduction methods exist with little capital investment as discussed below.
22.4 Constraints and Considerations
The agriculture sector faces unique challenges and constraints for solid waste minimization. Many of these challenges stem from the rural locations of many farms, oftentimes great distances from recycling providers. This can create a cost-prohibitive situation. In addition, many farms are operating on very tight margins with limited budgets, making capital investment dif cult to obtain. Water runoff and the use of pesticides can also poses challenges to composting and recycling waste materials. The strongest negative factor in the use of human and animal wastes for the production of food, feed, or fertilizer is the possibility of disease transmission, which would negate the gains derived from the use of the waste.
22.5 Potential Technologies and Strategies
Biomass is any plant-derived organic matter. Biomass available for energy on a sustainable basis includes herbaceous and woody energy crops, agricultural food and feed crops, agricultural crop wastes and residues, wood wastes and residues, aquatic plants, and other waste materials including some municipal wastes. Biomass is a very heterogeneous and chemically complex renewable resource. Biomass-processing residues uses by-products from processing all forms of biomass that have signi cant energy potential. For example, making solid wood products and pulp from logs produces bark, shavings and sawdust, and spent pulping liquors. Because these residues are already collected at the point of processing, they can be convenient and relatively inexpensive sources of biomass for energy.
