Table 40.3 displays the major potentially recyclable annual waste streams at the campus. The annual weights (tons) are shown. This information is useful because recycling vendors usually pay for recyclables based on weight. If these materials can be removed from the waste stream and sent to a recycler instead of the land ll, revenue could be generated and waste-hauling costs reduced.

As shown in the table, the college could potentially generate over $1400 annually from the sale of mostly aluminum cans and some other recyclables to local area recyclers. Figure 40.2 shows a typical recycling container used for schools. The amount paid per ton of recyclables was gathered from current market prices. Due to the low amounts of waste generated by all components except mixed of ce paper and newspaper, many vendors were not likely to collect these other items. However, mixed of ce paper and newspaper are the recyclable items that generate enough waste for county-sponsored weekly collection. Aluminum cans may be recycled but are generated in quantities that are too small for collection by the county. Additional cost savings could also be realized from a reduction in waste hauling costs. Based on this assessment, waste hauling charges can be reduced by approximately 75 percent by reducing the volume of waste taken by the hauler. The college could potentially save approximately $6900 annually (calculated from a 75 percent reduction of the annual waste hauling cost of $9212). This could be achieved by removing recyclables (mixed of ce paper, newspaper, and aluminum cans) from the waste stream. The cost savings will be achieved by reducing the frequency of waste collection at the facilities. It is also possible to recycle the other recyclable items which are not collected by the county, to further reduce the frequency of collection and subsequently lower hauling costs. If the above recommendations are implemented, the college will save a total of $8300 ($1400 from sale of aluminum cans, $6900 from waste hauling reduction.). Speci c information regarding the procedures used to achieve these cost reductions is in Table 40.4.

Improve the school recycling program for paper, plastic, and aluminum cans
Expanding the recycling program would eliminate the disposal of over 17 tons of solid waste annually Allow Lucas County SWMD to install a paper-recycling container on the campus (if LCSWMD is able to do so). Lucas County will then collect the paper at no cost, which would reduce waste hauling costs. Arrange to sell aluminum cans to one of the local recyclers Signi cant savings are possible by reducing the frequency of times the solid waste at the facilities is collected by Waste Management, Inc. Currently Waste Management, Inc. removes waste from the facilities either every week or every other week in various areas. The total volume of recyclable waste streams is estimated to be 515 yd3/year. By removing recyclables from the waste stream, the campus could divert up to 75% of the volume of their waste into recycling. The organization, therefore, can adjust their waste hauling schedules to accommodate the reduction of the materials to be taken to a land ll, thereby reducing the waste hauling cost. For this study, a conservative reduction in waste hauling cost is estimated to be approximately 75%. This will generate an estimated annual savings of $6900 Depending on fax usage, substantial paper cost savings could be realized, as well as waste reduction This will aid in reducing paper waste. At $2 per ream, the college could achieve signi cant cost savings as well
