recyclable paper is being generated. This usually includes all desks, copiers, and printers. Once generation points are identi ed, estimate the volume of paper that will be generated at each point. This task provides information for purchasing recycling receptacles. Receptacles vary in size and appearance.
5 Choose a vendor
Factors to consider in choosing a vendor include
Convenience of service Will the recycler pick up the materials Will pickup be as
needed or as scheduled Provision of receptacles Will the recycler provide free, lease, or sell recycling storage receptacles Pricing Will the recycler pay for the material and continue to pick up the material during market downswings Depending on the company s motivation, the factors for choosing a vendor may be equally important. However, in reality, one factor often is sacri ced to accomplish another. For example, some vendors will provide recycling storage receptacles, will pick up material, but will not pay for the material. The capacity of these receptacles should be relative to the paper generated at each location to avoid excess dumping. For inconspicuous locations, used cardboard boxes can be utilized as inexpensive recycling receptacles. For visible locations, attractive receptacles may be purchased. Table 8.21 is a list of suppliers of recycling receptacles. The waste assessment team recommends the following standard purchases if manufacturer s speci c needs do not dictate otherwise.
6 Purchase recycling receptacles
A 11 in 17 in stand-up cardboard box for each desk. A 14-gallon plastic bin for copiers. A 14-gallon plastic bin or stackable 11-gallon bin for the central segregation point.

Train personnel about the recycling program. Training should emphasize bene ts, but should also point out costs and extra effort required by personnel to make the program successful. The basic program can be instituted as follows:
7 Implement the recycling program
Place recycling receptacles at each desk. Make users responsible for emptying each receptacle when it is full. Union clean-
ing crews should empty the boxes when applicable. Transport receptacle contents to a central location in the of ce where larger receptacles are located. Segregate paper by grade into the appropriate box. The volume of each segregated bin multiplied by the number of pickups should be monitored to establish the generation rate for each

type of paper. Once a rate is determined, emphasis should be on reducing the amount of paper used and monitoring compensation from the recycling vendor. Periodic evaluation of the program will allow it to evolve. Post container locations for segregated recycling bins clearly throughout the facility. Emphasize the importance of not contaminating a segregated product with food or other waste. Contaminated recyclable are sometimes treated as trash and land lled. These policies should be regularly reinforced. This paper collection program should be monitored periodically to ensure that all the staff members at the company are disposing of paper in the recycling bins. Also, nd out if any changes or improvement in the collection and segregation method are necessary.
