his book is written with the experienced network administrator in mind. In order to save time here, and because we are all quite capable of following the simple directions on the screen, this chapter deals only with the base requirements and the important choices that you will have to make during installation. For those who are new to SQL Server, have no fear. The CD that contains SQL Server automatically starts up when you put it in. If you have disabled the auto-start functionality of your CD-ROM drive, you can execute the SQL Server Installation Wizard by double-clicking your mouse on the AUTORUN.EXE file in the root directory of the CD. The wizard is intelligent software and will identify the operating system and software requirements on your system and tell you the order in which you should proceed. Like any other Microsoft product that you have installed, you will have to answer a variety of questions such as installation path, registration name, and server name. Other questions are asked and you can fill them in quite easily. In the text that follows, you will learn about the base requirements for Microsoft SQL Server and the important SQL Server-specific choices that you will have to make during the installation process.

Since Microsoft Windows NT (the operating system required for SQL Server) is capable of running on different platforms, you technically have the choice as to the type of processor on which you would like to run Microsoft SQL Server. Your choices are simple. You can run SQL Server on the Intel x86-based processor or on Digital Equipment Corporation s Alpha processor. As you probably know, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 is capable of supporting up to four processors as it comes, and up to 32 processors in a single server with a customized hardware abstraction layer (HAL). Microsoft SQL Server is capable of leveraging that multiple-processor support and utilizing multiple processors to execute a single task. For example, a large query that would normally dominate a server s operating time can have its execution divided among the installed processors on that machine under SQL Server 7. Since the processors

can work together to perform tasks, the addition of even a single processor can tremendously increase the efficiency of your server. Since processor development moves very quickly, you should evaluate your choices at the time of purchase and take into account factors such as performance, cost, and the availability of compatible processors based on that architecture. Become aware of hardware ability and cost well before the time to purchase arrives. Combining multiple processors at lower levels can sometimes be just as or more effective than a faster processor, and may actually cost less. Now that you know the type of processors that SQL Server can function on, you will probably want to become familiar with some of the other hardware requirements. Understanding the minimum levels of acceptable hardware are, after all, vital to creating a successful server. As always, research and planning are the keys to making certain that the server you purchased is right for your environment.

Hardware Requirements
As you are undoubtedly aware, software packages typically have a minimum hardware requirement, which must be met in order for the software to function. SQL Server is no different and has its own specifications, which vary depending on your choice of platform. The following table details the hardware requirements for Microsoft SQL Server. Computer Intel x86-based computer and compatible systems must be equal to a Pentium 166 or higher. DEC Alpha and compatible systems are also acceptable. A typical installation requires 170MB of free disk space. Compact installations require a minimum of 65MB. Installing the Management Tools Only option requires a minimum of 82MB.
