Every administrator at some point has a problem during installation that must be solved. The primary difference between a good administrator and a poor one is how fast he or she can determine the amount of time that troubleshooting will require. Sometimes it will be faster to find the problem and fix it, and other times it will be much faster to simply re-install the software. Over the next few pages, you will learn the most common problems that arise from installing SQL Server and how to address them. Also included are some Transact-SQL statements that will help you determine the condition of your SQL Server.

The most common problems that occur during the installation of SQL Server tend to fall within the three basic categories of user error, hardware deficiency, and compatibility. While each of these categories contain problems that could be avoided by planning and testing, as an administrator you may have to review problems caused by another person s installation, or you might simply have made a mistake and not realized it. The next few paragraphs will cover each of these areas and what to look for. User error, of course, refers to the person who installed the server to begin with. Problems associated with user error can sometimes be found and solved quickly, but in many cases are better solved by re-installing the software. To locate and solve a user-error problem within SQL Server, first review the System and Application logs in the Windows NT Event Viewer. Many times problems stemming from user error will result in logged events that will help you identify the cause. The next step is to review all of the possible choices that the user had during installation and ensure that those settings are correct for your network. Hardware deficiency is very easy to determine and is one of the first things to check if a SQL Server installation fails or produces unexpected results. Manually check all of the hardware in the system using operating system tools, other hardware management software, or physical checks. Compare the hardware against the list of minimum requirements to ensure that the computer meets those requirements. If your sever meets the minimal hardware requirements but seems to have trouble running the server, check to see that all the hardware components were listed on the Windows NT Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). It is possible for a computer running Windows NT that has been functioning normally with hardware not on the list to develop problems with SQL Server because of the increased load. Compatibility issues most typically result from incorrectly loaded service packs and other software. Compatibility issues are solved by examining the required software and re-installing suspect software. Many times a compatibility issue can only be solved by re-installing the Windows NT or 2000 Server itself, all service packs, and any additional software that is required, and then re-installing SQL Server.

Now that you have learned what to look for when troubleshooting a SQL Server, let s take a look at the act of troubleshooting itself. There are some characteristics that all good troubleshooters have in common. The first of these is that they do not assume anything is correct. Just because you performed the installation five minutes ago, does not mean that you did everything right. Even if you remember doing it right, check it anyway. Top troubleshooters follow a logical path that begins with the simplest possible problem and progresses in stages to the most difficult. If you begin troubleshooting an installation by looking at the structure of databases when the actual problem is insufficient memory, you will likely spend a lot of wasted time. Master troubleshooters document each and every test, check, or observation as they go. Creating a record of what you did will not only help you keep track of your progress and prevent you from duplicating effort, but will additionally provide you with a valuable document that keeps common problems fresh in your mind and that others can learn from. When an installation of SQL Server does not produce the expected results, the first thing to do is stop and actually look at the problem. Many new administrators begin looking for causes to problems before they truly understand what is happening, or even follow a troubleshooting list without thinking about the problem itself at all. Once you understand that there is a problem, stop and actually look at the symptom you noticed. Frequently, you will find that just by looking at the symptom, you will discover the problem with little or no further steps required.
