One of the more important choices you can make during installation is how to install the SQL Server Services. These choices are made in the Services Accounts dialog box shown in Figure 1-4. You use this dialog box to designate the Windows NT account that SQL Server services will logon with. This choice is very important because not all accounts are created equal. In order to achieve the greatest flexibility with your server, you must choose a global domain user account as the account type because both system

and local user accounts are unable to cross domains. You should create a new account and use that account for all SQL Server services. You should never use the Administrator account as a service account because the normal changing of the Administrator password will affect your installation, and at a minimum, increase your management workload when changing passwords. Consider the following when choosing a services account.

Inter-service communication requires a domain user account to function. For example, if you install SQL Server and Microsoft Exchange Server together on the same machine and want the services to communicate with each other, you must use a domain user account. The same functionality is produced in Windows 2000, though the storage of users and their rights is handled differently. Using SQL Server to send notifications through e-mail requires a domain user account. Notifications and other types of mail usage is best enabled using Microsoft Exchange Server, which is most functional when using a domain user account. Multiserver jobs require a domain user account. A domain user account must either be a member of the local Administrators group on the machine or be a member of the SYSADMIN role in SQL Server. If you want communication and functionality to span multiple domains, you must use a global domain user account.
The experienced administrator will create the account before starting the installation process so that the account is waiting for him or her when the time comes. If, however, you did not remember to create an account, do not panic. You can always start User Manager for Domains over the top of the SQL Server Setup Wizard, create the account, and then close User Manager and proceed with installation. In the worlds of both Windows NT and Windows 2000, it is very common for certain kinds of software to install themselves as services. Because this method of application design is so common, there are certain properties that are associated with user accounts that require

special attention when a service uses the account to logon. The following list contains some general rules that all service-related accounts should follow.
w s s s s
The account should always be set so that the password does not expire. The account should not be set up using an account template. The account should not have any denied logon hours. Administrators should implement a plan for changing the password of system accounts to prevent security breaches. Administrators who have enabled auditing should watch the service accounts as well as user accounts for unauthorized attempts to access restricted areas. Service accounts should have nondescript names in environments where security is a concern because intruders will look for service accounts due to their high levels of access.
Paying attention to the service account details will bypass many potential problems for you and free up your time for other duties. During installation, you specify the services account from the Services Logon Account dialog.
TIP: You can specify a separate account for each service as an added security measure in high-security environments.
During installation, you can also choose to auto-start or not auto-start services at the time of system boot. This choice depends on your own environment. SQL Server uses a maximum of four possible services at any time but can run on as little as one. Also, you can make choices for only the SQL Server and SQL Server Agent services, but we will discuss the functionality of all four here. The four services and their responsibilities are listed in the following table. MSSQLServer This service is the heart of SQL Server and is required in order for SQL Server to run.
