You can control the auto-start setting for each of these services based on your own environment. synonymous terms), and in SQL Server 7.0, you were additionally required to specify a Unicode collation. In SQL Server 2000, you are no longer required to choose a code page. Instead, SQL Server operates using a collation that matches the operating system that you are installing SQL Server on. This new selection is called a Windows collation and it includes the character set, sort order, and Unicode collation all in a single designator. When you choose a Windows collation, you will choose based on the common language of the region that you are installing for. Microsoft operating systems install based on the same criteria and refer to this setting as a locale. You will additionally choose a sort order type by selecting all the applicable options from the given list, which includes Binary, Case Sensitive, and Accent Sensitive. For example, if you want to install SQL Server for the U.S. English locale, you would clear the SQL Collation checkbox on the Collation Settings screen and choose the Latin1_General collation designator. For standard installations, you would also select the Accent Sensitive option, but would not select either the Binary or Case Sensitive settings. This would specify that you wanted to store data using the U.S. English locale, in a case-insensitive manner, allowing accent specifications to be included in the storage of data. By excluding the Binary option, you are specifying that SQL Server will store the data using standard dictionary order. If your server will operate independently, or will replicate with only other SQL Server 2000 servers, these settings will be ideal. However, if you wish to coexist, or replicate with earlier versions of SQL Server, you will have to use SQL Collation settings in order to provide the backwards-compatibility required to achieve error-free communication. Understanding that many organizations will be upgrading to 2000 on a step-by-step basis, Microsoft includes SQL Collation as a support feature enabling you to replicate with older versions. By default, the standard SQL Server 2000 Setup program will select the U.S. English SQL Collation (SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_ CI_AS), which is compatible with the default install for earlier versions of SQL Server. We recommend that you leave the default selection as you are learning, and make more advanced choices as your knowledge of SQL Server 2000 increases. In SQL Server 2000, these choices are all made from the same dialog box called Collation Settings, as shown in Figure 1-5.
