The sort order options are very important and, though you do not specify these options when using a SQL collation, the choices you make when using a Windows collation can impact the performance of your server a great deal. In the following text, we will explore some of the issues surrounding sort order and what things you should take into consideration when making selections.

As you know, part of choosing a Windows collation is specifying the Sort Order options. If you have ever had to alphabetize a list of names, you have the concept of a sort order down pat. Sort order, then, is simply the way that the data you are storing gets organized. Another accurate description is that sort order determines the way data is compared, what data is considered equal during comparison, and in what sequence (order) data is returned as a standard query result (a query that does not specify its own sort order). Be careful not to confuse server sort order with the sort order specified in a

query. At query level, you are merely determining the way the data is displayed, whereas in server sort order, you are affecting the way data is actually stored. Sort order is very important because a poor choice here could cause queries to return incorrect data sets from queries. For example, if you have chosen to include case sensitivity as an option, and are running a query to find a list of people named Smith, your result set would include only data that matched the case specified in the query. If you specified Smith, the result set would return all those entries that matched Smith, but would ignore any entries that had been made as smith or SMITH or any other variation of case. In order for the case-sensitive sort order to function correctly, well-established rules and software-enforced restrictions would need to be in place at the client application level to ensure that users always entered the data in the correct case. If the same example is applied to a server without case-sensitivity, then the same query would return all examples of smith regardless of the case in which they were entered. You should not assume, however, that case-sensitive sort orders are a poor choice. Sort orders are chosen for performance more so than ease of design. For example, binary sort order is the fastest and simplest sort order available but lacks conventionality and may return result sets in a manner that is confusing to users. Additionally, many companies that produce and sell applications that use SQL Server as a base choose a specific sort order for internal reasons. The impact of this choice on the administrator is that frequently you will have to ensure that all databases that have been developed in-house are built to use a specific sort order merely to assure compatibility with another database. Most of the time, the database designer dictates the sort order. If you are designing a database and want to know more about sort order choice, please refer to one of the other books in this series that are devoted to database design.

TIP: You can use the system stored procedure SP_HELPSORT to check or verify the current sort order on any given SQL Server.
Network Libraries
The next dialog box displayed during installation is called Network Libraries, shown in Figure 1-6. SQL Server communicates with client computers using network libraries carried over standard transport protocols such as TCP/IP or NWLINK-IPX/SPX. As you are probably aware, network communication is established by packaging data into specially formatted packets that are sent across the network from one machine to another in a common format that each computer can understand. Inside this packet, there is information that specifies things like destination and sending computer as well as the data itself. One way to look at SQL Server network libraries would be as
