The basis for any software installation and its ability to function is always, of course, reduced to a series of files that are installed on the system. In the case of SQL Server 7, it is not necessary that you check each and every file to ensure that it was copied correctly because the Setup Utility would have almost assuredly produced an error during the copy process if one had in fact taken place. You should, however, take the time to ensure that the correct directory structure is in place and that you did not make a mistake when you chose the installation path. By default, the relational database engine and all of the management install tools are in the C:\PROGRAM FILES\ MICROSOFT SQL SERVER directory. You have the option of changing the drive specification or directory name during installation and should check the installation against your own notes if you did so. In addition to the files that are copied to the SQL Server root working directory, a number of system files are copied to the system root directory in order to provide some of the functionality that the operating system will require in order to run SQL Server. Take the testing stage very seriously and you will find that many of the problems that take administrators by surprise are avoided. There are many possible problems that can be avoided if care is taken to inspect the installation prior to implementing business databases. Over the next few pages, you will learn what potential problem areas to look for and how to actually look. The wise administrator will take what is learned here and expand upon it, looking with an increasingly meticulous eye at his or her installations.

installed, running, and configured to either auto-start or not autostart, depending on your environment s needs. If you want your SQL Sever to automatically start when the system starts or re-starts, you must at a minimum ensure that the MSSQLServer service and the SQLSERVERAgent service are configured to auto-start. Take the time here to actually stop and start the services. Sometimes a problem can be identified while the service is actually starting or stopping, and you will be much better off if you know about a problem before the server is introduced into a production environment. Just after install is also an excellent time to practice starting and stopping your SQL Server in various modes. For example, at some point you will probably have to start a SQL Server in minimal configuration mode in order to solve a configuration problem such as the over-allocation of memory. Starting the server in this mode can only be done from the command prompt using the f option. Learning to start and stop SQL Server services from the command prompt before you are in a situation that requires it is generally a good idea for administrators and consultants alike.
