Testing an installation of Microsoft SQL Server is perhaps the most overlooked step in successful administration. This is partly due to the fact that Microsoft has created a very thorough Setup Utility, and partly due to the human tendency to assume that we did it correctly. In the real world, some of the most common problems within SQL Server are caused by incorrect settings at the time of install. You should therefore always take the time to test any installation of SQL Server, and additionally perform some of the test procedures that we cover here. Now that you have ensured that the SQL Server files have been installed where you want them to be and that the SQL Server services are installed using the proper type of account, you will want to connect to the SQL Server. For a Typical installation, you will want to connect to SQL Server in a couple of ways. This will test management tools as well as the SQL Server itself. During installation, you can choose not to install the PUBS or NORTHWIND databases because they are test user databases that are not required for SQL Server to function. The remaining databases, however (called the system databases), must be present in order for SQL Server to provide the functionality that it is capable of. Frequently, administrators will skip this part because they know that SQL Server will not function correctly without these databases, but you should use this time to obtain information from and document the starting condition of the system databases for later use. In addition to checking the system databases, while you are connected in Enterprise Manager take the time to check the system logins that were created during installation. To view SQL Server logins, click on the LOGINS folder. There should be three logins already present on the server, as seen in the following list:

SQL Server 2000 Administration
These logins were created during the installation process and represent the three most important logins that will ever be created. The BUILTIN\Administrators group is only present if you installed SQL Server on a Windows NT Server or Windows NT Server Enterprise Edition and also chose to use Windows NT Authentication. It represents any member of the Windows NT local Administrators group and has administrative access on the server. The DOMAINNAME\Sqlserverserviceaccountname is the login account that the SQL Server service account uses to logon to the server with. You do not use this login for any purpose other than to check its ability to connect, but should be aware of it due to the inherent security risk involved with this account. This login also has administrative access on the server. The SA login is a default login, which is created for server management. SA is always created during installation and is always created without a password. You should give the SA login a password as soon as you can, and make plans to change the password on a regular basis as a general security step. The SA login is the complete manager of the entire server and has an alias of DBO in all databases by default. This means that the SA login has complete power everywhere in the server. The three default logins are not created in Desktop installations on Windows 9.x and are by no means the last logins you will have to manage in other installation types. 3 will discuss logins in detail and provide some sound advice on managing them.
