If your business intelligence tool is able to block misuse of a semi-additive fact, you will face a different problem. There will be situations where you actually want to sum the fact in question across the problem dimension. This does not occur often, but when it does the tool will most likely prevent the activity. This kind of activity occurs when the report will use the result to compute a period average. For example, assume you have a fact table that is a periodic snapshot of inventory levels by day. You wish to find the average daily inventory level of a product for January. To do this, you must first sum the daily inventory levels for the month. After the query returns this result, you will divide by the number of days in the period.
