Subject area requirements can usually be defined with characteristic simplicity. Recommended documentation is outlined in Table 18-1. For a given subject area, documenting this information can usually be accomplished in one to two pages of very brief tables. Figure 18-4 provides an example for a Sales subject area. The subject area is defined clearly, mapped to various departmental interests, and described in terms of measurement detail. Although simple, this framework for stating requirements is very powerful in its ability to communicate business capabilities. Nontechnical users can cultivate a clear understanding of what kind of analysis is supported by each subject area, even if they do not delve into the high-level design documentation.

Not every analytic requirement fits nicely into a single subject area. As you have learned, many powerful forms of analysis require comparing facts from one or more subject areas. This kind of requirement must also be documented. It can be done in a similar manner to the subject-area-specific requirements, depicted previously. Requirements documentation should also include a high-level indication of compatibility across subject areas. A simple matrix can communicate the necessary information, crossreferencing each measurement group with the major dimensions of the business. This effectively communicates if and how two subject areas can be compared. An example appears in Figure 18-5. As with the other artifacts of requirements documentation, you will notice that this matrix bears a strong resemblance to a more detailed item: a conformance matrix that cross-references fact tables with dimension tables. Framed for a business audience, this matrix communicates the same information from a business perspective. It does not contain all dimensions; rather, it only shows major dimensions that will link subject areas. It is possible to scan this matrix to understand which processes can be compared and how. For example, it is possible to determine that orders and shipments can be compared based on order_line but that commission payments are not allocated to the order_line or even the customer. This viewpoint also fosters a business user s understanding of the importance of developing a common representation for major dimensions of analysis; departmental users come to realize that their data is important in other parts of the business as well.
