example, they take particular care with signal cleaning, using skilled compressionists. Loudeye (www.loudeye.com) Seattle-based encoding lab. One of the longest established streaming media encoding labs conveniently located close to the Windows Media Technologies and RealNetworks development teams. They have assembled their own bulk encoding plant, which can handle high volume encoding tasks. The company also preconditions signals, prior to encoding. Loudeye offers live and on-demand webcasting services as well. Through their subsidiary, VidiPax, they can provide audio and video restoration services. MediaWave (www.mediawave.co.uk) In the UK, one of the more prolific encoding labs. MediaWave is actually a full service corporate intracasting services provider, from production to distribution. Encoding is performed using their encoding rack, integrated from popular encoding tools and high-spec servers.

Introduction
Applications that use audio and video to communicate deal with an enormous amount of data. For this reason, compression is an integral part of most of those applications, whether the application is dealing with high definition digital television pictures [1] or streaming media. Streaming media, as we noted in the main body of this book, would not be possible at all without compression techniques. Modern video compression schemes employ a combination of processing techniques. Something like an MPEG-4 encoder actually uses a veritable arsenal of basic compression techniques, in concert, to maximize data reduction. Those compression systems that have been widely adopted enjoy economies of scale and reduced market confusion, becoming the obvious choice for new applications. The process of standardization is not without risk. If the timing of the standards effort is poor, the standard may not become widely used. For example, if a standard is defined well ahead of market demand, other more cost-effective or higher performance approaches may emerge before the market takes off. On the other hand, if a standard is ratified long after alternative schemes have become well established in the marketplace, the exercise might as well have been academic. What can be stated with certainty is that any applications that use digital audio and video will be highly dependent on compression technol389
