The earliest computers used audio tape to store data. Printed matter was recorded on the tape using audio-frequency-shift keying (AFSK). This can still be done, but disks are more often used in modern computers, especially personal computers. Nowadays, tape is used mainly for storing voice, music, and/or image data. Video tape 533 Recently, however, compact disks (CDs) have begun to displace magnetic tape for the recording of speech and music. Magnetic tape has millions of iron-oxide or other ferromagnetic particles on a mylar film. In the recording process, a signal is applied to coils in the recording head. The recording head is an electromagnet. It polarizes the particles on the tape as the tape moves by (Fig. 28-9). The particles hold tiny magnetic fields until they are changed by rerecording. When the tape is played back, the movement of magnetic fields past the pickup head generates a fluctuating current in a small coil; this current replicates the original recorded signal.

Typical speeds for audio tape are from about one inch per second (1 ips) for dictation microcassettes, to 3.75 or 7.5 ips for reel-to-reel hi-fi tapes, to 15 ips for commercial hi-fi audio tapes. There are usually at least four tracks on an audio tape, providing a left and right channel for each direction of movement. Some tapes have 8, 16, or 24 tracks. The tracks run parallel to the length of the tape. Typical tape widths are 1/8 or 1/4 inch for consumer use, although in commercial and military applications, wider tape is often used. The thickness varies, being specified in mils, where 1 mil = 0.001 inch. Typical thicknesses are 0.5 mil, 1.0 mil, or 1.5 mils. The thinner a tape, the longer it will run for a given cassette or reel size. But thicker tapes have less tendency to stretch. Tape stretching causes wow in music and garbling of digital signals.

Video tape is wider than audio tape and must deal with a much larger amount of data per unit time. This is simply because a video signal contains far more information than an audio signal. A picture is, indeed, worth many words, or in this case, many magnetized particles!

These devices have become so common that most families today own and use them in the same way that 8-mm film cameras and projectors were once used. The VCR literally records and plays back a fast-scan television signal. The most common videocassette tape is called VHS. The tape itself comes in cassettes that measure 7-3/8 4 inches and are about an inch thick. The tape is 1/2 inch wide. The video tracks on a video tape run slantwise with respect to the tape, rather than lengthwise (Fig. 28-10). This facilitates a higher scanning speed as the tape moves through the VCR than would be possible if the tracks were parallel to the edges of the tape. Each slantwise track represents one video frame. The audio and control tracks run parallel with respect to the edges of the tape.

A typical VCR can use a camera for recording home video, or can be connected to a TV set to record movies, sports events, newscasts, etc. Playback is done through the TV set. A VCR allows you to fast-forward and rewind, so that you can skip over parts of a recording or replay certain parts. Slow-motion and stop-motion features are also included in many VCRs. Video tape, like audio tape, must be protected from magnetic fields and from excessive heat.
