MHz). Tuners don t have built-in amplifiers. Although they can provide enough power to drive a headset, an amplifier must usually be added if you want to use speakers. Modern hi-fi tuners are synthesized, deriving their frequency from a quartz crystal and phase-locking circuits. When a station is received, the circuit tunes itself automatically and stays exactly on the correct frequency. This is important for good fidelity, especially in FM stereo. There are two types of frequency readout: analog and digital. The analog readout resembles a slide rule; the digital readout displays the frequency in numerals, usually ranging from about 540 to 1600 in increments of 10 for AM (representing kHz) or from about 88.1 to 107.9 in increments of 0.2 for FM (representing MHz). Most tuners have several memory channels. The amplifier
In hi-fi, an amplifier is usually a self-contained box that delivers medium or high audio power to a set of speakers. There is at least one input, but more often there are several: one for a CD player, another for a tape deck, another for a radio tuner, and another for a microphone or turntable. Hi-fi amplifiers are available from retail and mail-order houses. Input requirements are a few milliwatts; the output can range up to hundreds of watts. Prices increase with increasing power output. Some amplifiers contain built-in tuners, CD players, or tape decks. A simplified hi-fi amplifier forms the basis for a public-address system. Massive amplifiers are used by popular music bands. Some such systems employ vacuum tubes, because tubes offer electrical ruggedness and linearity.
Speakers and headsets
No amplifier can deliver sound that is better than the speakers will allow. Speakers are rated according to the audio power they can handle. It s a good idea to purchase speakers that can tolerate at least twice the audio output power that the amplifier can deliver. This will ensure that speaker distortion will not occur during loud, lowfrequency sound bursts. It will also prevent physical damage to the speakers that might otherwise result from accidentally overdriving them. Good speakers contain two or three individual units within a single cabinet. The woofer reproduces bass (low-frequency) sound. The midrange speaker handles medium and, sometimes, treble (high) audio frequencies. A tweeter is designed especially for enhanced treble reproduction. Speakers are sometimes called loudspeakers. This term does not have anything to do with the relative volume or power-handling capability of the components. It probably arose in the early days of radio, when earphones or headsets were the norm. Compared to the output from a typical headset, of course, speakers really are loud. For privacy of listening, and to avoid irritating other people when you really want to blast yourself with some good music, a good pair of headsets is important. Headsets come in at least as many different forms as speakers. In general, they are rated according to how well they reproduce sound. But this is a subjective consideration. Equally expensive headsets can, and often do, exhibit huge differences in the quality of the sound that they put out. Not only that, but people often disagree about what, exactly, constitutes good sound. If you re buying speakers or headsets, it s a good idea to listen to them in action before you part with your money. With speakers, try to test them under conditions similar to those in the place where they will be used. Speakers never sound quite the same in a store as they do in a bedroom or living room.
