The Fragment Offset field indicates the relative position of this particular fragment in the original packet that was broken up for transmission. The first packet of a fragmented message will carry an offset value of 0, while subsequent fragments will indicate the offset in multiples of 8 bytes. Makes sense, no I love this field. A message is fragmented into a stream of packets and the packets are all sent on their merry way to the destination system. Somewhere along the way packet number 11 decides to take a detour and ends up in a routing loop on the far side of the world, trying in vain to reach its destination. To prevent this packet from living forever on the Internet, IP includes a Time-to-Live (TTL) field. This configurable field has a value between 0 and 255 and indicates the maximum number of hops that this packet is allowed to make before it is discarded by the network. Every time the packet enters a router, the router decrements the TTL value by one; when it reaches zero, the packet is discarded and the receiving device will ultimately invoke error control to ask for a resend. The Protocol field indicates the nature of the higher layer protocol that is carried within the packet. Encoded options include values for ICMP (1), TCP (6), UDP (17), or OSPF (89). The Header Checksum field is similar to a Frame-Check Sequence in HDLC and is used to ensure that the received IP header is free of errors. Keep in mind that IP is a connectionless protocol: This error check does not check the packet; it only checks the header. When transmitting packets it is always a good idea to have a source address and a destination address. You can figure out what they are for.

IP Address Classes
IP defines distinct address classes, which are used to discriminate between different sized networks. Classes A, B, and C are used for host addressing; the only difference between them is the length of the NET_ID subfield. A Class A address, for example, has an eight-bit NET_ID field and a 24-bit HOST_ID field. They are used for identification of very large networks and can identify as many as 16,777,214 hosts in each network. To date, only about 90 Class A addresses have been assigned. Class B addresses have 16-bit NET_ID and 16-bit HOST_ID fields. They are used to address medium-sized-networks and can identify as many as 65,534 hosts within each network. Class C addresses, which are far and away the most common, have a 24-bit NET_ID field and an eight-bit HOST_ID field. These addresses are used for smaller networks and can identify no more than 254 devices within any given network. There are 2,097,152 possible Class C NET_IDs which are commonly assigned to corporations that have fewer than 250 employees (or devices!). There are two additional address types. Class D addresses are used for IP multicasting, such as transmitting a television signal to multiple recipients, whereas Class E addresses are reserved for experimental use.
