As we have discussed, SONET and SDH were introduced in the 1980s as an optical solution for high-bandwidth vendor interoperability in optical networks. SONET transmission rates have steadily increased to OC-768 (40 Gbps), and the protocol was developed primarily to transport voice in fixed timeslots through the network, in retrospect making SONET inefficient for the transport of the increasing volumes of bursty traffic. Beginning in the 1990s, the Internet arrived, and with it a profusion of data transferred over the existing network infrastructure. STS-1 (51.84 Mbps) is the basic rate at which SONET operates, and higherbandwidth services are delivered as multiples of STS-1. This technique, however, is less than ideal for the transport of multimedia data payloads, and when it is used, a variety of challenges appear. These challenges include: the need to identify techniques to rescue the stranded bandwidth that occurs when SONET is used for data transport without having to upgrade existing SONET ADMs and cross-connect boxes; identification of the most effective way to carry data traffic over SONET; the creation and deployment of a reasonable technique for dynamically and efficiently resizing allocated bandwidth without traffic loss; methods and procedures to ensure survivability of link groups in the event of a link loss; and processes to support multiple traffic types across the same physical infrastructure. The solution to this plethora of challenges came in the form of Next-Generation SONET (NGS), and with NGS came a new set of terms: virtual concatenation, link capacity adjustment scheme (LCAS), and generic framing procedure (GFP). Virtual concatenation is based on the concept that a group of smaller containers can be concatenated to form a larger container. The containers, typically STS-1s, are then routed across the network towards the same destination where the individual STS-1s are realigned and sorted to form the original payload. virtually concatenated. This process of payload channelization is performed at the end points in the network. There are two different forms of virtual concatenation. If the channel rate is STS-1 and greater for a channel in a group, then high-order virtual concatenation (HOVC) is used. If the channel rate is below STS-1, then low-order virtual concatenation (LOVC) is used. The LCAS is a complementary technology to virtual concatenation. It facilitates the adjustment of the size of a group of channels that have been virtually concatenated. LCAS synchronizes transmission between the sender and receiver so that the size of a virtually concatenated circuit can be increased or decreased without corrupting the data signal. GFP is an encapsulation technique that allows traffic from a fibre channel-based storage area network (SAN) to be carried directly onto the SONET network efficiently and cost-effectively. Previously, storage traffic had to be converted to an intermediary protocol such as ATM, frame relay, or IP before being placed on a SONET network. This added overhead and issues related to security, resiliency, latency, and performance. GFP is an optical switch interface that lets companies use their SONET facilities more effectively. GFP can be deployed at the edge of a leased SONET network and can then be used to allocate portions of the circuit using virtual concatenation (VCAT). VCAT extends the utility of SONET transport by letting bandwidth be allocated in multiples of 50 Mbps, thus allocating only the bandwidth required by a particular application. In combination with VCAT, the cost effectiveness of GFP is significantly improved. Enterprises can transport data using optimal bandwidth allocations, and service providers can maximize the efficiency of their overall network. Furthermore, enterprises can deploy private storage over SONET solutions by purchasing storage-specific equipment for SONET and leasing SONET circuits from a service provider.
