You may come to realize that you have more than one target market for the same item. Sometimes a little creative thinking about your products and to whom they appeal will reveal new target audiences. Are there segments of the eBay community that you haven t tapped The secret to this strategy is to brainstorm and test. Think about who else might like your products. Test new waters by putting a few items in front of new audiences. Try out new categories, a variety of keywords, and different positioning approaches. For example, if you re selling black leather boots in the women s shoes category and sales are slow, try adding the word motorcycle to the title and putting in the motorcycle category on eBay Motors. Continually revisit and refocus your target market. An entirely new target audience may just fall into your lap.

Psychographics studies the motivations of your average shopper. Let s think about this concept a little deeper. People purchase goods for a variety of reasons, most of which can be traced back to primal urges like greed, fear, and pleasure. With these fundamental concepts in mind, ask yourself more questions: Is your item going to save people trouble Will it improve their health or help them avoid certain risks Will it improve their financial, love, competitive, or practical life Is it made of chocolate Will its secret ingredients boost their endorphin levels Consider the primal, visceral responses and feelings that drive people to make buying decisions. A study of these basic drives can be taken a bit further, too. Behavioral psychologist Abraham Maslow is credited with classifying motivations beyond the basic primal urges. His findings were useful to a number of fields beyond psychology most notably (for our purposes), marketing. He devised his now famous hierarchy of needs, which includes the following: Physiological needs The need to feel safe The need for love, affection, and a sense of belonging The need for esteem The need for self-actualization

Many of the ways we connect with customers fall into these hierarchies, and considering that most of us can get enough food and shelter, the categories that go beyond physiological needs become especially important. What many of us want is more of the following: Time and efficiency so we can get more food and shelter Long-term security Protection from psychological fear (real, imminent, or imagined) Acceptance into groups Approval of family Approval of peers and co-workers

We also yearn for self-actualization that lifts our spirits and lends meaning to our livelihoods, day-to-day activities, and relationships. If we can connect with customers in these areas, then we re really starting to sell. Think about it. Anyone can get a doughnut. But when you get a Krispy Kreme you re getting a special doughnut. Why is it special Several of Maslow s motivators are at work behind the intense desire for this yummy treat. Of course, it is food, so it does fulfill the physiological need for sustenance. Moreover, Krispy Kreme doughnuts are comfort food. Show up at the office with a dozen Krispy Kremes and everybody treats you as if you just walked on water. Your sense of belonging is affirmed. Suddenly, you re the guy who knows good doughnuts, and your need for the esteem and approval of your peers has been fulfilled by some fried dough and sugar glaze. All this allows Krispy Kreme to charge more for its doughnuts than most other brands. The company has generated demand by paying attention to marketing fundamentals and cultivating a certain mystique around its product. You can do it, too, by paying attention to a few details or going hog wild with a comprehensive, intense marketing plan. When you start thinking about your products in this way, you re on your way to eBay greatness. Connect with customers at these levels, and soon you ll have a group of customers that shop exclusively with you. It s not necessary to reinvent the wheel here (or in the case of Krispy Kreme, to reinvent the doughnut). What you do need to do is set yourself apart, and you do that by knowing what needs your customers respond to. Know what motivates them. Whether you re selling an airplane or a chocolate bunny, these motivators are what tip the scales and turn prospects into buyers. They can even turn dedicated low-ball price freaks into consistent, premium-paying customers that swear by your products and service.
