I realize that some may think it would be inappropriate to include exercise and good mental health on a food pyramid. But we cannot deny the linkage and synergistic effect these elements have on good health when combined with proper diet. My pyramid finds a place for moderate exercise and stress reduction and it would form the real foundation of a good dietary plan. With the changes I am recommending, doesn t the new pyramid begin to take on a look remarkably similar to the traditional ways our ancestors ate and lived There is no coincidence here. Young people and future generations yet unborn have a unique opportunity to actually live even healthier and longer lives than our ancestors, provided they are wise enough to return to the traditional ways of eating. This is because of a couple of very important health factors that our grandparents didn t have. One is access to much better medical care. Advances in medicine and early diagnosis of diseases allow us to have a better chance of correcting genetically oriented degenerative problems at an early stage. Another factor is greater access to many different types of fresh fruits and vegetables, which allows us to eat a healthy diet throughout the year, not just seasonally. And one final factor: the emergence of nutritional supplements, which ensures that we can have all the nutrients we need to help prevent cancer and other degenerative diseases. Those of us who learn from the past, take advantage of modern advances in protecting our health, and practice the recommendations from the AMC Cancer Research Center will be much more likely to lead healthier, longer, and more active lives than our ancestors.
