or basic health and detoxification, the human body needs proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and micronutrients consisting of vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial compounds. In an ideal world food alone would provide the full spectrum of these nutrients. In reality, however, the demands of modern life work against that. As those of you who have tried and perhaps succeeded in getting that full spectrum solely from food sources have no doubt discovered it is a consuming daily routine around which pretty much everything else must be arranged. Even so, it may not be enough for some people. Unusual physical or mental activity, stress, medication, and environmental pollution can each create a greater demand for nutrients. The truth is that most of us have many other things to do with our time. Adding to the difficulty is the fact that concentrations of nutrients vary with food growth patterns, processing, preparation and cooking methods, variations in dietary habits, and bad eating habits. Whether you are among those who make a conscious effort to eat nutritiously or those who think an order of fries constitutes a daily quota of vegetables, the central question is not whether you have a nutritional deficiency, but to what degree. And that begs a second question that nutrition scientists are still struggling with: How do we know whether we are getting the right amounts of the essential nutrients from our diet to ensure good health Most experts are in agreement on the specific amounts of these nutrients that are needed to

prevent conditions of deficiency. That is what the government s recommended daily allowance (RDA) deals with. But there is disagreement not only about the amounts necessary for optimal health and energy, but also about how best to obtain them. This chapter provides a very easy-tounderstand, implementable program of fundamental nutrient supplementation with a nutrition scientist s focus. I will go over what may seem fairly basic: vitamins and minerals. We all know we need them, but even nutrition experts disagree on how much we need. To make the case for my recommendations, I ll cover what each one does.

Nutritional deficiencies arise from food and lifestyle choices but also from other factors such as: poverty psychiatric disturbance individual idiosyncrasies religious beliefs food fads excessive alcohol consumption poor appetite dieting to combat obesity restricted diets prescribed by physicians for the management of specific diseases a variety of conditions, including diseases of the liver and biliary tract, prolonged diarrhea from any cause, hyperthyroidism, pernicious anemia, and various disorders of the digestive system treatment with antimicrobials increased tissue requirements such as during periods of growth, hard physical work, exercise, and during pregnancy, lactation, and menstruation diseases associated with an increased metabolism, such as hyperthyroidism, and conditions accompanied by fever or tissue wasting as well as periods of stress and following injury

The following choices or conditions bring their own nutritional demands. Smoking causes a need for greater amounts of vitamin C. People who consume a lot of wine need extra B-complex vitamins. People who take certain prescription drugs, such as those for high blood pressure, need to ensure that they are obtaining adequate levels of potassium and folic acid. Aging can decrease the body s ability to absorb vitamins B-complex, C, and D and calcium.
` Constructing the Optimum Nutritional Supplement Formulation
Since deficiency of a single vitamin, mineral, or other essential micronutrient is rarely encountered clinically, it is customary practice in cases of suspected deficiency, as well as in preventative treatment, to use a multiple-nutrient approach. Such formulations should provide the highest number of the essential micronutrients needed by healthy individuals. These formulations should include electrolytes and trace elements. The optimum formulation should also include other antioxidants and/or free radical scavengers, which have been shown to enhance the immune system; prevent certain cancers, cardiovascular disorders, and inflammatory diseases; and slow aging. And they should include important compounds such as myo-inositol, choline, methionine, glutamine, taurine, lycine, L-carnitine, and trimethylglycine, all of which work synergistically with other antioxidants and help with methylation, liver function, cell membrane integrity, and energy. Most importantly, the constituents of a good formulation must be stable and taken in amounts and forms that can be properly absorbed and utilized by the body. Here is a rundown of what each group does for you.
