Because vitamin E is inherently unstable, it must be packaged in airtight soft gelatin capsules or esterified with acetate or succinate, which provides good stability and absorption but blocks antioxidizing activity. However, antioxidant properties can be restored once they ve been absorbed into the body.

Vitamin D, or more correctly Vitamin D3, is actually a hormone needed for both the absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus. The primary role of vitamin D3 is the mineralization of bones and teeth and the regulation of blood calcium levels. It is also critical for the growth and differentiation of several tissues. Further, it has been shown to reduce the rate of certain cancers. It aids in nervous system and heart function and contributes along with calcium to the prevention of rickets. Vitamin D3 should be taken together with calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, boron, vitamin C, and the B vitamins to ensure healthy bones and connective tissue.

The three forms of vitamin K are vitamin K1 or phytonadione from plants; vitamin K2 or menaquinones from bacteria in our intestines; and a synthetic called vitamin K3 or menadione. Unlike the other fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E vitamin K is not stored in the body. Vitamin K is a necessary factor in the formation of prothrombinogen and other blood-clotting mechanisms; the body can t form blood clots without vitamin K. Along with vitamin D3, vitamin C, and estrogens, vitamin K is important in regulating calcium. Vitamin K has also been found to be a powerful antioxidant, which can counteract free radicals and key cytokines involved in inflammation. Deficiencies of vitamin K can lead to excessive bleeding and osteoporosis. Recently, it was approved for the treatment of osteoporosis in Japan.

The B-complex vitamins consist of B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin and niacinamide), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (cyanocobalamin), folic acid, and biotin. Choline and myo-inositol are micronutrients that are usually included with the B-complex vitamins because of their connected biological functions. Each B-complex vitamin has its own unique biological role, but in terms of efficacy, they work best in combination. They are very important in many biological processes, the most significant of which are energy production during the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats and keeping our immune, skeletal, and nervous systems healthy. Vitamin B1 (thiamin)

plays an essential role in the metabolism of carbohydrates into energy and helps to promote normal appetite and digestion. It is also effective in reducing fatigue, reducing buildup of fat deposits in arteries, converting fatty acids into steroids, and helping to maintain healthy nervous and cardiovascular systems. Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) is required for the repair and growth of tissues as well as synthesis of our DNA. For instance it is found in the retina of the eye and is essential for sight. Vitamin B2 assists in metabolizing nutrients such as proteins, fats, and carbohydrates and therefore is critical in the formation of energy for cells; is a cofactor in glutathione reductase, which keeps glutathione in the state that is necessary for its antioxidizing activity; assists in forming red blood cells; helps to correct iron-deficient anemia; and has a significant role in antibody production. Niacin, niacinamide, and nicotinic acid are considered three forms that have vitamin B3 activity. Vitamin B3 is involved in the regulation of blood sugar, antioxidant activity, and detoxification reactions and is important for the production of energy. It is an essential constituent of coenzymes I and II that occur in a wide variety of enzyme processes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates. Niacinamide is necessary for DNA formation and important for the integrity of the central nervous system. It also aids normal tissue function, particularly the skin and gastrointestinal tract. Niacin has also been shown to reduce cholesterol levels. However, high doses of niacin (greater than 500 mg per day for most humans but much less for some) leads to flushing of the skin, especially face and hands (redness, burning, and stinging). Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) is involved with the metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates in the form of coenzyme A. It is also involved in the synthesis of sterols, hormones, porphyrins, and the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Vitamin B5 helps to keep the skin healthy, prevents wrinkles, and stimulates the adrenal glands. It also aids in resisting infection and healing wounds as well as blood formation and stimulation of antibody production.
