Alpha lipoic acid (and its reduced form dihydrolipoic acid) is a powerful cellular antioxidant. It has a unique ability to deal effectively with free radicals in both a water and a lipid environment. Made up of sulfurcontaining compounds that convert back and forth depending on cellular conditions, alpha lipoic acid destroys hydroxy radicals, singlet oxygen, and hypochorous acid; and dihydrolipoic acid destroys peroxyl, superoxide, and hydroxyl radicals. With dihydrolipoic acid taking the lead, they work together in recycling many important antioxidants, including vitamins E and C, glutathione, and coenzyme Q10, back to a reduced state. This antioxidant system has the ability to increase cellular glutathione levels significantly, something very important in both xenobiotic and antioxidant detoxification, and to bind or chelate heavy metals such as mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and excess iron and copper. Dr. Lester Packer and coworkers at the University of California at Berkeley have done extensive studies on the antioxidant properties of alpha lipoic acid and dihydrolipoic acid. Experimental and clinical studies have also shown alpha lipoic acid to be effective against certain cardiovascular disorders, chronic liver disease, neurological degeneration, AIDS, heavy metal poisoning, radiation damage, cancer, diabetes, and aging. This appears to be related to both its antioxidant properties and its role in the uptake and breakdown of sugars for energy. These effects of alpha lipoic acid have led to its use in the prevention and treatment of diabetes. A recent placebo-controlled human study showed that alpha lipoic acid increases insulin sensitivity, resulting in increased glucose uptake into cells in Type II (adult-onset or insulin-dependent) diabetes. The production of alpha lipoic acid and dihydrolipoic acid in our bodies decreases with age and levels are low in many disease states. Since only small amounts are available in our diet, supplementation is very important.
Coenzyme Q10 and Acetyl-L-Carnitine
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a lipid-soluble, natural chemical antioxidant produced by our cells. As is true of all antioxidants, to be effective it must be in a reduced state. CoQ10 plays a critical role in breaking free radical chains, especially in cellular membranes; it protects against lipid peroxidation and lowers LDL cholesterol. CoQ10 also reduces other

antioxidants, especially vitamin E, providing indirect protection to cell membranes from free radical damage. Along with alpha lipoic acid and acetyl-L-carnitine, the active form of carnitine, which is derived from the essential amino acid lysine, CoQ10 prevents decay or aging of the mitochondrial membrane or mitochondria, the energy powerhouses of our cells. CoQ10 together with acetyl-L-carnitine (important in fatty acid metabolism) and alpha lipoic acid supply the biochemical spark that creates the energy in our mitochondria for all cellular functions, including detoxification. These essential components for all cellular energy metabolisms give us the extra energy to perform better and to fight off degenerative diseases and, especially, aging. They improve vitality, heart and circulatory function, immune function, and brain function. The father of CoQ10 research, Dr. Folkers at the University of Texas, found in heart attack patients with very low levels of CoQ10 that supplementation decreased further heart attacks and improved heart and circulatory function. CoQ10 also has been shown to help prevent chronic fatigue syndrome. This triad helps to prevent not only heart disease, but also cancer, diabetes, gum disease, immune dysfunction, chronic lung disease, and neurological degeneration. It also helps slow down the aging process. Although our bodies produce both CoQ10 and acetyl-L-carnitine, supplementation of these compounds offers great additional benefits and there are no side effects or toxicity even at high doses.
