Cardiovascular function is dependent on maintaining a healthy level of cholesterol. Overproduction in the liver or getting too much from diet or both runs the risk of elevating cholesterol to dangerous levels. In managing cholesterol in our bodies, careful attention must be paid to lipoproteins and triglycerides. Even though they are very important molecules that transport cholesterol to various tissues for use in many bodily functions, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low-density lipoprotein (vLDL) give rise to the label bad cholesterol when present in high amounts and when they become oxidized and stick to blood vessels. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is considered good cholesterol because it transports cholesterol back to the liver for metabolism and excretion from the body. The ratio of LDL to HDL, known as the cardiac risk factor, tells us how much cholesterol is being taken to tissues or broken down and excreted. Getting a proper balance of necessary fats, carbohydrates, and protein and supplementing to achieve my formulations for fundamental micronutrients (and thereby promoting xenobiotic and antioxidant detoxification and methylation) will ensure homocysteine and fibrinogen levels are within safe limits. This and adding a small amount of aspirin (80 mg/day) will help regulate fibrinogen as well as prevent the overformation of blood clots and c-reactive proteins. The supplements in the table on page 115 will lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels and generally benefit all aspects of good cardiovascular function. Potassium D-glucarate effectively inhibits the synthesis of cholesterol; helps lower total cholesterol, LDL, vLDL, and triglycerides; maintains high levels of HDL; stimulates its conversion, breakdown, and detoxification; and lowers blood pressure.

Octacosanol, a long-chain fatty alcohol found in many plants (actually in the waxy fiber that covers the leaves and fruits), several grain oils, sugarcane, and eggs, especially caviar, and policosanol (of which octacosanol is the major component) have been found to lower LDL cholesterol and elevate HDL cholesterol. In addition, they prevent oxidation of LDL cholesterol, inflammation, and blood clots. Octacosanol and policosanol work by inhibiting the synthesis of cholesterol but the exact mechanism for this process is not known. Gamma tocotrienol, one of the vitamin E isomers, has been found to lower total cholesterol and LDL and elevate HDL. Gamma tocotrienol appears to have a similar effect as statin drugs in inhibiting the synthesis of cholesterol, but without the many side effects. Silymarin and rosemary extract (carnosol and related compounds) have all been found to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Increased amounts of silymarin and rosemary extracts from the recommendations in 6 can lead to an effective lowering of cholesterol and prevent LDL cholesterol oxidation. Gamma oryzanol and -sitosterol have been found to lower cholesterol and triglycerides as well as prevent LDL oxidation. Gamma oryzanol is an important antioxidant found in grains; it is isolated from rice bran oil. It enhances the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids, increases bile acid excretion, and inhibits the absorption of cholesterol. By increasing the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids and their excretion for detoxification purposes, circulatory cholesterol is lowered. -sitosterol is a plant sterol, which also helps in the prevention of cholesterol absorption.
