One of the most disturbing aspects of aging is a decline in overall brain function from minor declines in cognitive ability to senile dementia and, especially, Alzheimer s disease. Circulatory disorders such as heart problems or stroke can severely restrict the pathways of oxygen and nutrients such as glucose to brain cells.

Although DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), an essential omega-3 fatty acid derivative, plays a vital role in the development and maintenance of effective brain function throughout life, the body s ability to make DHA from alpha linolenic acid appears to decrease with age. DHA is the building block of human brain tissue and the primary structural fatty acid in the gray matter of the brain and the retina. Studies have shown that DHA deficiency and the incidence of Alzheimer s disease are closely related. This is also the case in depression, memory problems, and attention deficit disorder (ADD). DHA and the essential fats are also very important in preventing inflammatory reactions in the brain. Lecithin contains phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolanine, and phosphatidylinositol, all of which are important phospholipids for brain function because of their critical role in cell membrane activity. These phospholipids plus phosphatidylserine have been found to correct cognitive impairment related to neurological degeneration; they also work to prevent viral damage to brain cells. Ginkgo biloba extract has been used for several thousand years in China to enhance brain function and prevent neurological degeneration. In Chinese medicine, ginkgo biloba is used to help increase memory and age-related decline in mental performance. In many well-controlled human studies, a standardized gingko biloba extract was found effective in the treatment against Alzheimer s disease, especially in tests related to decreasing the disease s progression. Ginkgo biloba extract helps to improve cerebral circulation and prevents blood clots and radiation- and toxin-induced free radical damage. The active ingredients in ginkgo biloba are antioxidants called ginkgosides and terpenoids.

American blueberries are closely related to European bilberries. In many experimental and human clinical studies, treatment with blueberry extract provided dramatic improvement in brain function and a protective effect against neurological degeneration. In addition, both extracts have been found to increase brain and eye circulation and prevent age-related eye diseases. Overall, the flavonoids in blueberries and bilberries, because of their antioxidant activity, increase glutathione levels in the brain and eyes, decrease free radical damage, and prevent glycation. Gamma tocopherol and ascorbyl palmitate are important fat-soluble antioxidants to prevent neurological degeneration; they also keep the lipids in the brain and aging formulation from being oxidized.

Detoxification Endgame: Avoiding Disease
n the preceding chapters, I provided tools for ensuring a lifetime of good health by supporting your body s powerfully protective detoxification systems. But putting these words into action, given our human nature, usually requires some motivation. There is nothing like a health alarm to get things moving. So let s look beyond our discussion of the wonderful health benefits of food and supplements to what happens if our detox systems don t get the support they need. Let s look at the insidious world of cancer.
How Does Cancer Develop
Cancer results from the complex interaction of many factors related to our environment, lifestyle, diet, and genetic makeup. These interactions are most often connected with what we eat and drink, use of tobacco products, exposure to sunlight and ionizing radiation, and exposure to cancer-causing agents found in our environment. Cancer begins and flourishes in most of the tissues (organs) in our bodies where cell replication is continuously taking place. In healthy

tissues a balance between cell death (apoptosis) and the formation of new cells is strictly controlled. By contrast, cancer cells divide and grow in an uncontrolled manner and the abnormal cells can spread to other tissues or organs. Carcinomas, sarcomas, myelomas, leukemia, lymphomas, neuroblastomas, and gliomas constitute the main categories of cancer. Carcinomas are the most common cancers arising in tissues of the skin, oral cavity, lung, breast, and vagina, among others; sarcomas are found in the connective tissue cells; myelomas and leukemias originate in cells of the blood-forming portion of the bone marrow; lymphomas are found in the lymphatic system; neuroblastomas arise from neuroblast cells, which are related to the sympathetic part of the nervous system; and gliomas are cancers that arise in the brain from connective tissue like cells called glial cells and astrocytes. Most cancers exist in the form of tumors, which are either malignant or benign. Malignant cells can spread, or metastasize, to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or bloodstream. If they are not stopped, the malignant cells of metastatic cancer can migrate and infiltrate the brain, lungs, liver, bone marrow, and other vital organs. Benign tumors, although they are not classified as cancer because they do not invade other tissues, have been known to progress to cancer or become malignant. Typically, benign tumors are not a threat to life unless they arise in the brain or other vital organs. In the United States, skin, lung, colon, prostate, and breast are the most common types of cancer. The number of new cases of cancer in this country is increasing each year. People of all ages get cancer. However, middle-aged and elderly people are most often affected because of the long latency period of cancer (ten to thirty years). Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in both men and women with approximately 1.2 million cases in the year 2001. Prostate cancer is the second most common in men (198,000), and breast cancer is the second in women (194,000). Lung cancer is still the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women in the United States. Brain cancer and leukemia are the most common cancers in children and young adults. Cancer development is usually a very slow process that often takes place over a period of years or even decades. The length of time (latency) to cancer formation depends on a number of factors such as genetics; the amount, type, and length of time of carcinogenic exposure; detoxification capabilities; DNA repair capacity; immune system strength; as well as diet, lifestyle, and age. The two major classes of genes critical for cancer development are oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. Oncogenes stimulate cell growth and proliferation; tumor suppressor genes slow
