In some cases, curcumin, silymarin, and omega-3 fatty acids also work synergistically with certain chemotherapeutic agents such as doxorubicin (adriamycin). In addition, curcumin, silymarin (or silibinin), and omega-3 fatty acids also inhibit cox-2, a critical enzyme in cancer cell growth. Certain phytochemicals, notably green tea polyphenols, apigenin, silymarin, and genistein, are effective inhibitors of tyrosine kinases. These and other tyrosine kinase inhibitors are also starting to show promise in cancer treatment because of their ability to counteract cancer cell growth in a very selective manner without many side effects. A Cancer Diagnosis
If you or someone you know is diagnosed with cancer, it is very important to get a second opinion from an oncologist, a physician trained as a cancer specialist, and to become knowledgeable about your disease. The AMC Cancer Research Center has a free telephone service called the Cancer Information and Counseling Line (CICL) designed to help people with cancer and their families. I believe that the CICL is by far the best such service in the United States. (For contact information on CICL, see the Resource Guide at the back of the book.) For nearly twenty years, the AMC Cancer Research Center has provided valuable information by professionals well trained in all aspects of cancer treatment and counseling, including the psychosocial effects of the disease. In addition to CICL, which is in the Center for Behavioral and Community Studies, AMC has four other centers: the Center for Cancer Causation and Prevention, the Center for Nutrition in the Prevention of Disease, the Health Communication Center, and the Research Methodology and Biometrics Center. These groups are united by their goals of cancer prevention and control. The scientists at AMC are committed not only to understanding how and why cancer occurs, but also to developing effective strategies to help people counteract risk factors and reduce their chances of ever contracting the disease.

The AMC Cancer Research Center does research on three aspects of cancer prevention: primary, intervention, and postcancer prevention. Primary prevention deals with reducing cancer-causing agents through lifestyle and behavioral changes, preventing the effects of carcinogens and tumor promoters, and counteracting the activity of mutated or bad genes. Intervention prevention involves studies to decrease the cancer risk in individuals who have one or more high-risk factors for the disease. Postcancer prevention attempts to increase the length of survival and prevent recurrence of cancer, including secondary cancers that result from treatment as well as new cancers. Recently, significant efforts have been put toward developing very specific cancer treatments that do not suppress the immune system and have few if any toxic consequences for normal cells. Together with advances in diagnostics that identify cancer at earlier stages, this is our best hope for ultimately finding a rational and effective cure for cancer. Already we have witnessed the development of some promising cancer treatments that stimulate the death of cancer cells without affecting normal cells, and inhibit the growth of blood vessels to tumors (angiogenesis). Progress will continue to be made in this area and in finding a way to keep the immune system strong throughout treatment. The AMC Cancer Research Center and other cancer centers are active participants in this research.
